He's not a cancer, but he's also not a good teammate at this point in his career. Screaming and carrying on throwing your arms up in the air after you make a catch (after dropping the prior 2) doesn't make you a good teammate nor leader. Being with the team, putting the team before yourself and truly taking steps with your teammates to become better AS A TEAM.......those are some of the things that make you a good teammate. Not to mention performing on the field. While he hasn't been a bust, there are more than a few TEs in the league right now that are far and above better than Shockey has been to this point in his career. |

Yea, TEs that haven't been played as an offensive lineman. Celebrations don't make you a bad teammate. He doesn't talk shit about his teammates, doesn't make ridiculous demands, doesn't knock the Giants management publically (or otherwise). I don't have a problem with him working out in a personal program, especially if he feels it will be best for him, when he's not required to be here anyway. |

In all due respect, that's bullshit. When you have a new QB in his first workout program as a starter you, as the superstar pass receiving TE would be there if he was a good teammate. Again, one of the things that makes a good teammate are those who do the best thing for the team, not always the best thing for themselves. Funny that 98% of the team is there and Shockey isn't, yet many don't see anything wrong with that. If you were a teammate in the gym in Jersey everyday, what would you feel? If you were a part of the offense and was there everyday in Jersey to work with your new QB and your pass receiving TE, who is supposed to be a huge part of our offense and our success, isn't there.....how would you feel? Would he be a great teammate in your eyes? I don't mean to make all too much of this, but there's more of a team dynamic in football than any other sport and to dismiss it is wrong. Here's a guy who has been no more than an average TE since he got here, you would think he would be here to work with his new QB. And look at that......somebody got in his ear and told him the same things I've been saying and voila....he's here. |

Shockey has actually curtailed some of his demonstrativeness over the last couple of years, especially last year which may be a factor in his decline in production last year. He is a player that plays with extreme Passion. I can't recall any of his teammates being critical of that passion. Few TE's were better than he in his rookie year and at the point at which he got hurt his second, his 48 catches were way above all TE's after 9 games and even at the end of the season he was in the top 10 of TE's. While he is responsible for alot of his fall off last year, the coaches have to take some of the blame because they used him in ways he hadn't been used before. He should have adjusted faster true enough, though had he had a full camp perhaps he could have. Not a bad point but why then isn't Burress taking heat for also being in Miami working out with Shockey? At least Shockey has worked with Eli. In all respect, if this program brings Shockey back to the level he was in his rookie season and beyond then it is good for the team not just himself. The only teammate that made any comment was Eli and has made none since he talked to Shockey. I think that it is likely that many of us who don't see this as a problem are waiting to see if it works. If it doesn't then Jeremy takes the hit. |

The only reason I mentioned his field "passion" and/or antics was to point out that it shouldn't be viewed as leadership. It's not. If you do all the other things and add the antics, then fine. But antics nor passion alone makes you a leader nor a good teammate. See Ricky Watters and a slew of ex NFLers. |

I understand and did not mean to give the impression I was saying it was leadership. It is how he plays the game at his highest level. If he shows leadership at all it is by the example he has always set of always working hard. That has been a constant comment I have heard about him: that he is a hard worker. Overall though, no he is not one of the leaders. He is too emotional for that at this stage. |

Burress gets no pass from me. However it is a bit different in the respect that Shockey is already part of this team and has spoken about taking a leadership role. Well this isn't the way to do it. As far as the fact that we only know that Eli spoke up, do you really think that we'd be privvy to the others? Eli made a stupid mistake by making that phone call public. You don't think Coughlin is grinding his teeth over this? You don't think that any other person on that team that is busting his ass everyday with his teammates have no feeling either way about Shockey not being there? And from what my original point was, it was showing that he wasn't a good teammate and now he's there because of it. Are there other guys like Burress that are the same way? Yes. But this was a Shockey thread.

My point was wondering why only Shockey was getting the heat. After all it is equally important for a new team member to make a positive 1st impression and to get on the same page as a QB. If it is wrong to not be at the voluntary program then maybe this should be a thread about all the ones who didn't show. You may be right about the others keeping quiet if it bothered them but I have heard through a close friend of mine who was a high school counselor of one of the current Giants and still sees him several times a year, that Shockey is well liked by his teammates. |

lol I didn't say that people don't like Shockey. It seems that you don't understand my underlying point about being a good teammate and leader. I agree what you said about other players. Like I said, Shockey isn't alone, but this thread was about him, not the attendance of workout programs throughout the NFL. Yet in addition, not every situation has a new QB going into his first full starting year and an underachieving TE with freakish talent. I never bitched about this type of thing before, but this year......this year Shockey should be there. And 'his people' know that, that's why he flew here last night. |

Did Burress go back to Miami? Just curious. From what I understood, he worked out down there until we signed him, then reported to the teams off-season program after moving. |
