Who's hot

Deloatch also nearly had an outstanding over the shoulder interception yesterday; he dropped the ball when he fell to the field. ... WR JaJuan Dawson continued his strong camp, making a deep catch from Kurt Warner. ... S Jack Brewer, with an interception.

Who's not

WR Willie Ponder has struggled in punt return drills. "He didn't help himself, put it that way," Coughlin said. And, for the second time, a pass that deflected off Ponder's hands was intercepted. ... QB Ryan Van Dyke, who has yet to take a snap during team drills. Coughlin said he might get a few plays against the Chiefs and will have more of an opportunity to play in subsequent preseason games.

Quote of the day

"When I feel it's the right time to do it, I'll do it. I certainly am well aware when the first game of the year is." -- Coughlin, on his timetable for naming a starting QB.

Injury report

CB Ray Green (knee) was injured in a practice collision and carted from the field. WLB Barrett Green (concussion) returned to practice. CB Will Allen (foot) also worked. DE Sean Guthrie (dehydration) was released from the hospital and was on the sidelines. DE Lorenzo Bromell (knee), WR Tim Carter (hamstring), S Jason Doering (sprained knee), LB Carlos Emmons (leg), LB T.J. Hollowell (ankle), TE Mark Inkrott (knee), DT William Joseph (pectoral muscle), WR James McKnight (toe), T Mike Saffer (ribs), LG Rich Seubert (leg) and WR Jamaar Taylor (knee) did not practice. T Ed Ellis was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a bulging disk in his neck.

Depth chart

CB Frank Walker is starting to stand out and is making a strong push for nickel cornerback, a job eight-year veteran Terry Cousin seemed destined for when he signed as a free agent. Walker has shown strong instincts, more discipline than he did as a rookie and the ability to jump a route. He had another interception yesterday, his second of the week. "We need Frank to be a good football player," Coughlin said.

TODAY'S BUZZ

The linebacker position remains interesting. MLB Nick Greisen continued to start with the first defense but knows he needs to have a solid outing against the Chiefs. With Emmons out, Quincy Monk will start at strongside linebacker. With Green returning to practice, he is expected to start on the weakside. If Green isn't available, Coughlin said Wes Mallard or rookie T.J. Hollowell would have gotten the nod. Hollowell, a rookie free agent from Nebraska, has made a good impression on the coaches. But at this camp he needs to get back on the field.

RANT OF THE DAY

After WR Ataveus Cash :D jumped to make a nice catch of a high pass in the two-minute drill, Coughlin let him have it -- for not getting the ball back to the umpire in a timely fashion. The receiver appeared to think he had gone out of bounds, stopping the clock. "That cost you the game!" Coughlin barked.

A look at how Giants QBs Kurt Warner and Eli Manning fared in yesterday's practices:

Warner

Yeah, yeah, yeah, there was a two-minute drill, team drills, the challenge of throwing into and against the wind. But most importantly, Warner connected with Jeremy Shockey in the end zone during red-zone drills. It was the first touchdown of camp for the Pro Bowl tight ends, who returned from foot surgery. Then Warner hit TE Marcellus Rivers for another.

Manning

Shockey's first reception of camp came from Manning, in a 7-on-7 drill. Do we need to mention that Giants fans would like to see that combination hook up for years to come? RB Tiki Barber leaped high to secure a high pass from Manning in the end zone. Both QBs had some difficulty with the wind; a couple of Manning's sailed.
