KR/PR AVION BLACK

The Giants' search for a return man continues. Yesterday they signed Avion Black, who has played for the Bills and Texans but was not in the NFL last season.

Black is expected to return punts tomorrow night against the Chiefs in the first preseason game. Black, 27, was waived by the Texans last Aug. 27. With three wide receivers injured and having waived Delvin Joyce on Monday, the Giants needed to make a move.

Coach Tom Coughlin is hoping Black can relive some of his better days: His 76-yard punt return against the Ravens in 2002 was the first special teams touchdown in Texans history.

"I think you're always looking for more speed on special teams," Coughlin said.

CB Curtis Deloatch, a rookie free agent from North Carolina A&T, will get the first chance on punt returns against the Chiefs.

"I think the wind was pretty tough (Tuesday) and I thought he did pretty well back there," Coughlin said.

Black was on the field during the afternoon practice and made a reception in team drills.

Black led the Texans in kickoff return average (22.0 yards) and punt return average (13.4). He entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by the Bills in 2000. After the 2001 season, Buffalo made him available in the expansion draft and Houston claimed him.
