Shockey pumped up for return BY NEIL BEST STAFF CORRESPONDENT August 10, 2004 ALBANY - The ball of energy that is Jeremy Shockey is itching to roll. The tight end, sidelined since right foot surgery June 22, spent the morning yesterday with his helmet on and mouth moving, signaling first downs, clapping and trash talking at defenders. Shockey let Michael Strahan, whom he called "old man," Nick Greisen and others know he would be back soon. "In a couple of days try that on me, Nick," he screamed at Greisen after a play. Before the surgery, Shockey estimated he would miss two weeks of camp. But coach Tom Coughlin refused to offer a timetable for him or fellow former first-round pick William Joseph (chest muscle). "It's going to run the course, no matter what I say," Coughlin said. "I'm hopeful that we're close to being there. They need to practice." Coughlin has little patience for nagging injuries. Yesterday, receivers Tim Carter (hamstring), James McKnight (toe) and Jamaar Taylor (knee) sat out. "It's very difficult to show what you can do if you don't practice," said Coughlin, who praised receiver JuJuan Dawson for his ability to stay on the field. On the field The team ran a goal-line drill with live tackling for the second time in camp. Ron Dayne scored for the first team on his second run in a series that began at the 3. Eli Manning led the second team to a TD by finding TE Marcellus Rivers in the end zone off a play fake ... In a two-minute drill to end the day, Manning and the first team were stopped on four plays and Kurt Warner was intercepted by Frank Walker as he led the second unit. Behind the scenes New coaches fill in a personal questionnaire that the NFL shares in its annual "kickoff" package for the media. Coughlin's favorite athlete as a child: Jim Brown; toughest player he's coached: Keenan McCardell; person he'd most like to meet: Pope John Paul II; funniest player he's coached: Kyle Brady; one thing he would change about pro football: take the names off the jerseys. (I would remove his existence, but, that's just me...) |

Shockey was practically on the practice field -- if only as the offense's biggest cheerleader and the defense's primary heckler. When DE Michael Strahan was irked at being knocked down during a drill, shockey baited Strahan who responded with a "bring it on" gesture. "A couple more days, my little friend," shockey yelled. "Couple of days, old man." Ya just gotta love the guy. Now if he could make it onto the field one day, that would be super. |
