Giants: Player Profile Friday, August 06, 2004 R ATAVEUS CASH When Ataveus Cash lunged to secure a catch at the sideline yesterday, it was one in a series of impressive receptions he has made in the first week of training camp. That might come as a surprise to most people, but not to Cash. A former college quarterback at Hampton, Cash has found the new offense relatively easy to learn. His background helped: In the weeks before his senior college season, Cash had to master a new offense under a new offensive coordinator. The stakes might be higher, but the learning curve is, apparently, no steeper. "As far as learning the offense, it's not difficult at all for me," Cash said. "It's fairly easy, actually." At 6-1, 205, Cash has become one of Eli Manning's favorite early targets. Cash, who spent most of last season on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster in December, knows special teams play will probably decide whether he makes the cut this time. But he has given himself a chance. Not bad for a guy who could be best known as the Giants' former No. 13. It was in early June when Cash received a call from one of the team's equipment guys, informing him that his jersey number was being given to the Giants newest quarterback, Kurt Warner. Not until later did Cash realize he should have been somehow compensated -- Manning, for example, is paying for Jeff Feagles' family vacation -- for giving up his number. "That's fine with me," Cash said. "The only thing I really need (from Warner) is to get us some wins." WHO'S HOT SS Shaun Williams, leaping to break up a pass on a deep ball to RB Ron Dayne. Yes, a deep ball to Ron Dayne. ... CB Will Allen, knocking down a pass intended for Amani Toomer. ... LB Quincy Monk, making a diving interception of Eli Manning. WHO'S NOT Anyone who is offsides or committing a false start or illegal procedure. And there have been plenty of those mistakes. "That drives me crazy," Coughlin said. "I cannot understand illegal procedure penalties." ... WR David Tyree, who dropped another easy ball. QUOTE OF THE DAY "I do remember playing here and having some rivalries with the Firebirds." -- QB Kurt Warner, reminiscing about his days in the Arena League, which he called "some of the most fun I've ever had playing football." In Albany, he has been reminded several times of the games his Iowa Barnstormers had against the Albany Firebirds, particularly a 74-73 Iowa loss. INJURY REPORT LB Carlos Emmons (leg), S Jason Doering (sprained knee), TE Jeremy Shockey (foot), DE Lorenzo Bromell (knee) and LG Rich Seubert (leg) did not practice. CB Will Allen (foot) skipped the morning session. DEPTH CHART Ike Hilliard calls this the best group of receivers he has played with from top to bottom. As long as he stays healthy, Tim Carter is likely to solidify the No. 3 receiver job but rookie Jamaar Taylor has had an eye-opening start, especially since he's less than a year from knee surgery. Kurt Warner said the Rams probably had more speed than the Giants. Taylor is a burner who, if fully recovered, could help to change that. ROSTER MOVE The Giants signed FB Charles Stackhouse and waived/injured FB Edgar Cervantes. GIANTS BUZZ Every practice, Coughlin gives his players a situational drill where they practice an unusual scenario that could occur in a game. Yesterday's circumstance had the offense with the ball deep in scoring position with 13 seconds remaining and the officials were reviewing a play on a challenge. Instead of being in the huddle, where time would be wasted after the review, the players were at the line of scrimmage, ready to run the next play. The key is for the players to be ready for anything. "There's nothing we do (in practice) that doesn't happen (in games)," Coughlin said. "I just told the team that." NEWS OF THE DAY For the first time since camp started, the Giants began to experiment with the personnel on the first offensive line, moving David Diehl from right guard to right tackle and inserting rookie Chris Snee at right guard. Ian Allen had been working at right tackle with the first unit but it's likelier Diehl will be there for the season opener, as long as Snee proves he is ready to play. |
