Charged up over Eli's snub CARSON, Calif. - LaDainian Tomlinson can picture it as easily as he can envision huge holes before they open up. The Giants play in San Diego in 2005, he takes the handoff and searches for Eli Manning, the quarterback who did not want to play for the Chargers. "I think I might run out of bounds on purpose and look for him on the sideline when I run the ball," Tomlinson said. San Diego's "LT" admitted he wouldn't mind playing a couple of plays on defense in that game. "I wouldn't try to hurt him or anything," he said. He was laughing when he said it, but he doesn't leave any doubt he was disgusted with the power play the Giants' wonder boy pulled before the draft to force his way out of San Diego, where Tomlinson is the lone star on a team of unknowns. He could have used Manning's help. Tomlinson, who has averaged 1,521 yards rushing in his first three seasons and is the best running back in the NFL, took it personally when Manning, the Giants' new franchise quarterback, dissed all over the Chargers. "Anytime a player comes out and says he doesn't want to play for the team that you're on - I don't know any person that is not going to take it personally," Tomlinson said. "You put your heart and soul into a team, no matter what the situation is. I don't care if we didn't win a game, the league is designed for the better players to come out of the draft to go to the teams that are struggling. For him to say that, it was hard to deal with." Tomlinson says it's hard not to perceive Manning as a "spoiled brat." Manning's act was an embarrassment to the Chargers. "Everybody talks about it: Here are the lowly Chargers. Eli doesn't want to go," Tomlinson said. "We have pride, too, you know what I mean? For him to do that, I've never seen anything like it. It's a privilege to be the No. 1 pick in the draft." You can't really blame Manning for wanting no part of the Chargers. San Diego has great weather, beautiful beaches and a bad football team. The Chargers might have a hard time matching their 4-12 record that earned them the first pick in the draft. They hold training camp in the Los Angeles area and had an overflow crowd of 30 fans watching practice on a perfect afternoon this week. They have an offensive line that might offer less protection than the one the Giants have, if that's possible. San Diego has not made the playoffs since 1995. There have been four winning seasons in the last 21 years. It's the 10-year anniversary season of the Chargers' only Super Bowl appearance. They were blown out of that game by San Francisco, 49-26. And now the Chargers have this image problem. They ran scared of Manning and traded him to the Giants moments after selecting him first overall. Once Manning let it be known before the draft he would refuse to play for the Chargers and was threatening to sit out the season and go into next year's draft, GM A.J. Smith did extensive homework and put his plan into action. He would take Manning, the Chargers' "value pick, our bar of gold," Smith said, then count on the pressure being on the Giants to step up and make a big-time offer. It happened with the Giants on the clock. Smith made a deal he felt wasn't available before the draft. The Giants took Philip Rivers for him and then the Chargers swapped with the Giants, who added three picks, including next year's No. 1. But while the Giants were willing to pay Manning the money given to the overall No. 1 pick even though they had fourth-slot money in the rookie salary-cap pool, the Chargers still haven't signed Rivers. San Diego is offering No. 4 slot money and Rivers wants to be paid like the top pick because the Chargers have first-slot money. It's just a further embarrassment for San Diego. Manning hasn't missed a training-camp practice. Rivers hasn't been to one. But that's no surprise. Tomlinson didn't sign until late in training camp in 2001. Cornerback Quentin Jammer didn't sign until after the first game of the regular season in 2002. Smith isn't panicking with Rivers missing valuable time. "This is business," he said. "Life in the NFL." Smith, very pleased with Rivers and what he picked up in the trade, still said what Manning did "was an insult. It's an embarrassment to the organization because you are singled out. The whole nation looks at you. It's an insult to me personally, the head coach, the Spanos family and more importantly, the people on the football team that are working hard here." It was a "terrible hit" for the image of the team, Smith said. And he knows the only way to change it is "go win. Show me something. Show us a winner and I'm sure people will say something nice." If Manning didn't want the Chargers, then Tomlinson is glad he didn't come. He respects that Manning had leverage. "I don't hate him or anything," he said. "I hope the best for him. It was just surprising it happened." Still, when Tomlinson is heading toward the sidelines next year, Manning may want to step back a few feet. |
