WHO'S HOT

The free safety position, where free-agent acquisition Brent Alexander clearly has an edge after playing under Tim Lewis in Pittsburgh the past four seasons. "He really can be a big help on the field with the other players because of his knowledge," coach Tom Coughlin said. Coughlin also lauded big hitter Omar Stoutmire, the starting FS the past two seasons, for his "shockability." ... K Bill Gramatica has been kicking off well and nailed a 43-yard FG to end practice.

WHO'S NOT

The weather. It's been the coolest training camp in years, much to Coughlin's dismay, and rain is in today's forecast. "Don't mention that word," said Coughlin, who didn't rule out the possibility of practicing in drizzle. ... Free-agent RB Stacey Mack, whom the Giants won't sign "at this time," Coughlin said.

VS. THE JETS

The Giants will work twice Saturday against the Jets. The teams won't scrimmage or do live drills but the Giants will benefit, Coughlin said, by "having an opportunity to compete against someone else. Getting a chance to get a feel, particularly for your younger players, how they will compete, how they fit in. Having an opportunity to evaluate people against people and hit another team."

Coughlin said he always arranged practices with other teams, including New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Atlanta, when he was in Jacksonville.

INJURY REPORT

DE Keith Washington (knee) returned to practice. S Jason Doering (sprained knee), TE Jeremy Shockey (foot), DE Lorenzo Bromell (knee) and LG Rich Seubert (leg) did not practice. Actually, they do light drills away from the action.

DEPTH CHART

Ian Allen remains the starter at right tackle, which could rank as a minor surprise. "We're going to let that go for a while and see how it is," Coughlin said. "We'll be prepared to do whatever we have to do to look at different people at different spots, but we'll take it probably through this weekend before any of that takes place."

In a drill with the second offense, RG David Diehl moved to RT and Allen was at LT.

GIANTS BUZZ

Terry Bradshaw visited camp yesterday and weighed in on the QB situation. "Load up the wagon and let (Manning) play," Bradshaw said. "I wasn't as emotionally developed as he is, but I'm glad I played. I never have been a believer that you learn by watching." Bradshaw, who said he has never met Coughlin, also had some advice on the coach's demeanor. "You tell him to loosen up," a laughing Bradshaw said. "Tell him I said that."

CATCH OF THE DAY

WR Tim Carter, diving to catch a Manning pass at the pylon on a red-zone drill. Carter is off to a fast start. "I have liked (his) speed," Coughlin said. "There's no question that he puts fear into the defensive backs." As long as Carter stays healthy -- a problem in past seasons -- he should emerge as the third receiver and a deep threat. "He's got to play through some things," Coughlin said. "It's very critical for him and his career that he learn somehow to stay on the field."

GIANTS QB WATCH

A look at how Giants QBs Kurt Warner and Eli Manning fared in yesterday's practices:

WARNER

In one drill, he badly overthrew Amani Toomer deep, then laced the ball to Toomer, who made the catch on a crossing pattern. In the first two-minute drill of camp, Warner threw an incompletion then an interception, by FS Brent Alexander. Some bad, some good.

MANNING

A decent day for the rookie, who was successful in the two-minute drill, completing 4 of 6 passes and leading the second offense to a field goal. Manning's passes always have plenty of zip and the receivers seem to be adjusting to the difference in velocity.

They didn't mention that Will Allen hurt his foot again. Yes....his surgically repaired foot. He says that it doesn't hurt where the surgery took place, but right next to it. He'll probably only practice once per day for a while.

Shocker huh? Will Allen hurt? Say it ain't so! <_<

Now if he can just catch the ones that hit him between the 8 and the 4.....he should be ok.

Where was it reported Allen hurt his foot? He was out there, playing hard, all session this afternoon. No limp or any other indication his foot hurts in any way.

Carter has been catching just about every ball thrown his way.

From the 8/5 Coughlin Transcript on Giants.com:
Quote:

Q: Is there something wrong with Will Allen?

A: He had some soreness yesterday afternoon and we decided to go with 1 a day with him for a while. It’s not right where the problem was, it’s on a different part of his foot.

From the Camp Report on Giants.com:

Cornerback Will Allen missed the morning practice because of soreness in his surgically-repaired foot.

“It’s not right where the problem was, it’s on a different part of his foot,” said Coughlin, who added that Allen will probably work once a day for “a while.”

“It’s nothing to worry about,” Allen said. “They just wanted to try something different to see how I feel. See how2 it goes, see how the foot responds.

“Where I had surgery, that part is fine. It doesn’t hurt. There’s no way you can simulate this stuff (in practice) in your workouts. You have to ease your way in instead of jumping in.”

Terry Cousin stepped in for Allen at left cornerback.

I wasn't there in the morning so I didn't now he didn't practice, but, like I said, he was fine in the afternoon.

Saw him, Peterson, Green and some other guy that I couldn't ID at the mall today. Said hi, that was it. Apparently I'm getting shy in my old age.

Then again, I did go off on Stout... just a little bit.
