TE MARK INKROTT

Mark Inkrott has tried taking the back roads to the NFL.

He went to college at the University of Findlay, a Division 2 school in Ohio. He has been cut from two NFL training-camp rosters. And he spent a season in NFL Europe.

Finally, he may be getting somewhere. Inkrott will compete with the three other tight ends -- Joe Dean Davenport, Marcellus Rivers and Visanthe Shiancoe -- to be one of Jeremy Shockey's backups. Inkrott has a chance to stick.

If he does, it would mark the end of a winding football journey. Coming out of high school, Inkrott verbally committed to Bowling Green. But the school strung him along, then at the last minute denied him a scholarship, he said. He landed at Division 2 Findlay.

After his senior season, Inkrott's coach arranged for him to work out with Ohio State during its pro day. Inkrott went undrafted, but he signed as rookie free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He spent a year in their camp, a year in Giants camp, a season in Europe and now he's back for another round of Giants camp.

Whether he sticks or not, Inkrott plans to plod on with his football trek.

"If it doesn't work with the Giants, I hope it will work somewhere else," he said. "If I have to go to Europe next year I'll do that. As long as I'm healthy and capable, I'll keep playing."
