NEW GIANT LBS ARE TRUE BLUE By PAUL SCHWARTZ August 5, 2004 -- ALBANY — During those hours together on the field, in endless meetings and in the time spent inside their dorm suite as roommates, Carlos Emmons and Barrett Green do their share of talking. The two new Giant linebackers reflect on the fates that brought them here, the adjustments needed to fit into a complex defense, and especially on the impact they both expect to make to help restore a once-dominant unit to its former glory. "We talk all the time, every night we're talking about it," Emmons said. "How we can make this city go crazy if we turn this thing around — that's what we're looking forward to doing." (Glad to hear it!) The Giants believe both have the goods to accomplish their mission. Here at training camp, the sight of the tall-as-a-timber Emmons at strong-side linebacker and the small, compact Green making like a jackrabbit at weak-side linebacker is reassuring. Both have strong pedigrees, both arrive with solid leadership and work-ethic credentials, and both come aboard lugging with them the feeling that they have something to prove. "I look at it as being a helluva opportunity," Green said. "It's what I've been waiting for, something I worked for and something I think I deserve. I'm going to go out there the first game and try to light it up. That's what I do." As part of a major renovation — for the first time since 1967, the Giants will start a completely new trio of linebackers, with Nick Greisen currently manning the middle — Green and Emmons are considered upgrades over Dhani Jones and Brandon Short, who started in those spots the past two seasons. The Eagles decided they could not stretch their salary cap to hold together a defense that sparked a run to three consecutive NFC Championship games, letting Emmons and cornerbacks Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor depart. The Lions liked what Green gave them as a three-year starter but not enough to keep him. |
