Emmons fitting in with Giants By VINNY DiTRANI STAFF WRITER ALBANY, N.Y. - The Philadelphia Eagles are taking a risk, says Carlos Emmons, by letting three veteran defensive players like himself and cornerbacks Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor leave at the same time. He says he spoke recently with former teammate Brian Dawkins, who was bemoaning the fact three of this longtime buddies exited at the same time. "It happens every year," the Giants' new strong-side linebacker said Tuesday at the University at Albany training camp. "Teams can't keep everybody." In fact, that was one of the rallying cries the Eagles used last season during their unsuccessful drive to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Veterans who had been through the recent surge of three straight trips to the NFC title game knew their days together in the Philly locker room were dwindling. Emmons was a cheerleader last postseason, having suffered a broken fibula in the next-to-last regular-season game in San Francisco. He thinks the injury, plus the fact he will turn 31 before the upcoming season, factored into the Eagles passing on re-signing him and eventually replacing him, ironically, with former Giants' weak-side linebacker Dhani Jones. "It's always odd going to a new team," said the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Emmons, who previously made the switch from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia in 2000. "You always feel like you have to prove yourself all over again. And I know they expect me to do something special here." He remains limited to one practice session per day as he completes his rehab. "I could practice twice a day, but it's probably not worth it," said Emmons, who had experience in defensive coordinator Tim Lewis' system when he played in Pittsburgh. "A few things have changed, there's some different terminology and some different techniques, but it's pretty much the same defense. And Tim hasn't changed, either. He still has that fire about what he's teaching and that desire to shut down the offense." Emmons is one of three new linebackers this season, the first time since 1966 (Jerry Hillebrand, Mike Ciccolella, Larry Vargo) to 1967 (Bill Swain, Vince Costello, Ken Avery) that the Giants have changed their entire set. Emmons will play what he considers the "anchor" position on the defense. "The strong-side linebacker, no matter where, does all the dirty work," he said. "You have to take on blockers from every angle, and you have to do a lot in coverage." He is what used to be the prototypical linebacker size before the league began opting for the smaller, faster linebackers. "The NFL is a copycat league," Emmons said of the trend. "Some people have had success with the smaller guys and now the theory is the only way you can cover is with 5-foot-11, 6-foot linebackers who can run. But speed has nothing to do with coverage. It's a matter of taking the right angles and getting leverage." |

I was sad to see Carlos leave, as he was one of my favorites because he was underrated. I like guys who do the dirty work. But I will say this. The Eagles could not get over the hump with that core of veterans. Emmons said it himself. They tried to use that as a rallying cry and it did not work. It was time to re-tool a few positions. I've been to camp twice and the LBs look very, very good. Trotter especially. |

 They don't have to re-tool. There are already plenty of "tools" on the team.
