Giants odds and ends Tuesday, September 2, 2003 By TARA SULLIVAN Babers still a mystery Rod Babers, the Giants' fourth-round draft pick who has been missing in action since Friday, is apparently headed home to his family in Houston. That's at least what coach Jim Fassel heard through Babers' agent Monday morning. General manager Ernie Accorsi wasn't as convinced later in the day, however, saying he'd heard conflicting reports about Babers' whereabouts. "I don't have any confirmation of where he is," Accorsi said. "He never returned our calls and his family never returned our calls. The only information we've heard is from his agent." Accorsi requested and received a roster exemption from the NFL for Babers, which leaves the cornerback under the Giants' control but keeps him off the active roster. Accorsi said the team could waive him, trade him, or put him on the left squad/reserved list within five days, although there is no set timetable for when any of that has to be done. Fassel said that Babers' grandfather passed away Thursday, but didn't know if that was a factor in Babers' behavior because he hasn't spoken to him. Injury report The Giants are very healthy heading toward their season opener, with LB Nick Greisen (hamstring) the only doubtful participant. TE Jeremy Shockey (rib), DE Michael Strahan (toe), LT Luke Petitgout (foot), C Chris Bober (rib), RT Ian Allen (groin), TE Marcellus Rivers (thigh bruise), and CB Will Allen (shoulder) all practiced Monday. Shockey will need to wear a protective pad over his broken rib. Fassel said Rivers and rookie Visanthe Shiancoe would share backup duties behind Shockey. Palmer backup, for now Fassel awarded Jesse Palmer the backup quarterback position, but still left the door open for Jason Garrett to vault ahead of him if circumstance warrants. "I saw Jesse do enough good things and if he gets guys that'll catch the ball and run and protect him and do all those things, he can be productive," Fassel said. "But if he has to go in now and play and we're not being productive, I won't hesitate long to make a switch." Practice squad The Giants' practice squad includes WR Derek Dorris, TE Darnell Dinkins, OL Omar Smith, OL Dion Meredith, and DE Radell Lockhart. Fassel and tight ends coach Mike Pope were particularly happy about the return of Dinkins, who continues to improve in his first year at the position. "I don't think he made as much progress as I wanted him to at tight end," Fassel said. "The whole learning curve with everything about how to run routes, catch, block, and learning the position, he struggled at times. Hopefully we'll get him more work and if we have a problem with injuries or somebody's not performing, I'll bring him up." Special performance After making his roster cuts, Fassel said "there were at least three, maybe four, where the determining factor was special teams." One of those was clearly rookie David Tyree, a wide receiver who was an outstanding special teams player at Syracuse. In Thursday's final preseason game against Baltimore, a game in which Giants' special teams forced four turnovers, Tyree caused one fumble and recovered another. "He got the ball for us twice," Fassel said. Tyree felt that game secured his roster spot, and he was right. "It was the first time I got a chance to get some real duty out there and I got to show what I'm capable of doing," he said. "They sort of let the dog off the chain." Tyree was very effective on his coverage assignments. "That's what they brought me here to do," he said. "When you're out there and you're part of the action, you obviously see how special teams changes the game, the momentum when we have them on their heels like that. You keep coming and they're going to eventually fold."  |

I just happened to be on Gaints.com when the practice squad was announced. I think they put good choices on there with Dink and Dorris. I like Omar smith there also but I'm not so sold on Meredith or Lockhart. Guess we'll see how those two develop and look next year |
