Strahan, Shockey and Almost Everyone Else Ready

Neil Best

September 2, 2003

Fifty-two of the Giants' 53 players practiced yesterday, the lone exception being backup linebacker Nick Greisen (hamstring), and it appears everyone but Greisen will be ready for Sunday's opener against the Rams.

That includes defensive end Michael Strahan (toe), who did not play in preseason, and tight end Jeremy Shockey, who has not played since Aug. 15. Coach Jim Fassel said Shockey will wear protective gear, presumably a flak jacket, to protect his cracked rib.

Fassel named Jesse Palmer the backup quarterback and said rookie Carson Dach, who signed a week ago, will remain the long snapper for the opener. He said the Giants did not make any waiver claims yesterday.

Babers Turns Up

Jim Fassel said cornerback Rod Babers, the Giants' fourth-round draft pick, surfaced late Sunday and yesterday was en route to his family's home in Houston. Babers' agent said the player had been in contact with his parents.

Babers did not show up Saturday at Giants Stadium, when he would have been waived, and the Giants could not locate him before Sunday's final cuts were due. So they requested an active roster exemption, leaving him officially in limbo.

"He's fine," Fassel said. "That was our concern, that there was something wrong with the guy." Fassel said he was unsure why Babers went AWOL, but he said Babers' grandfather died Thursday.

Blue Notes

The five-man practice squad includes tight end Darnell Dinkins, receiver Derek Dorris, defensive end Radell Lockhart, tackle Dion Meredith and center Omar Smith . . . The Giants planned to bring in fullback Greg Comella for a physical after the Titans cut him Sunday, but the former Giant signed with the Texans yesterday . . . The team practiced on the new FieldTurf surface in its practice bubble. Jim Fassel plans to use the new FieldTurf-covered field at Giants Stadium as his primary practice facility this season, perhaps beginning tomorrow. Workers yesterday cleared the field after the last of Bruce Springsteen's concerts Sunday.
