Like many of you, I read this article today and was like "yeah right"----figured Dayne was just blowing things out of proportion......He's not going anywhere.

Lo and behold, WJFK AM Washington/Balt reported a few hours ago that the "inside word" is that Dayne will in fact be released on Sunday. I guess we will see in a couple of days.....

The article:

Dayne flops, appears out of running

BALTIMORE - Ron Dayne had a feeling all summer he wasn't going to be the Giants' backup running back this season. Last night he had a feeling that he finally played his way out of a job.
After another disappointing performance in the Giants' 30-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Dayne conceded he "probably" wouldn't survive the Giants' final cuts, which Jim Fassel is expected to announce Sunday. And while that might be his own frustration, it's becoming clear he no longer fits in the Giants' plans.

The clincher came last night when he gained just 13 yards on five carries, fumbled once and dropped a couple of catchable passes in the preseason finale. Even Dayne admitted Dorsey Levens was more impressive, rushing seven times for 18 yards.

"If (Fassel) was judging on this game, (Levens) won it," Dayne said. "I don't know what else to say."

There might not be anything else, especially since running back Delvin Joyce had a huge night for the Giants, rushing 17times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Asked after the game how Joyce fits into the crowded backfield, Fassel said: "You watched the game tonight. That'll go a long way towards what I'm thinking. That's the way it's going to be."

As for Dayne, a Heisman Trophy winner and 2000 first-round draft pick, Fassel couldn't hide his disappointment. "He was one of many at the beginning of the game that wasn't playing well, dropping passes and fumbling the ball," Fassel said. "Guys get so many opportunities to prove themselves."

Several players did just that, despite a first quarter Fassel said was "about as ugly as you're going to play football." The Giants were down 17-0 just 2:03 into the second quarter when Palmer benefitted from four turnovers (two fumbled punt returns, one fumbled kickoff, one fumbled snap) and a partially blocked punt. But most importantly to Fassel, Palmer (10-for-19, 91 yards) improved his own play.

"He started out rough, but he wasn't getting a lot of help," Fassel said. "But Jesse came on and started to do a lot better. I was happy he was able to hang in there and turn things around."

Who else looked good? Well, Carson Dach's snaps were nearly perfect, which was good news since long-snapper Ryan Kuehl could miss the regular-season opener. And with Mike Hollis sitting out with an injured back, Matt Bryant did all he could to win the kicking job, nailing all his field goals (36, 34, 32) and his three extra points.

"I did everything I could do and overall I think I did well," Bryant said. "But the decision is not up to me."

I don't see how those were two "drops". One of them he could have caught and the other was completely out of his reach. Either way, when you're a QB in the NFL, you should be expected to throw the ball a whole 6 yards in the air and make it a little easier for the back. For easy, routine throws, those were two bad throws, not two drops.

Buuuuuut......as I've said in another thread, if we're going to need that spot for a safety or corner who is talented and can help us on special teams as well.....I have no problem cutting Dayne at this point. As been said, you only get so many opportunities. And he needs to seek opportunities elsewhere at this point. It's probably best for all involved.

First game, Tiki tired, I'd have to give the ball to Levens or Joyce. And you all know I always back Dayne, but I think his time is up. I'd hate for a guy like Tyree, LeBlanc or Green not to make the team because we keep him.

Sorry to say. :(

Dayne still stays with the team.....barring a trade that is.........

His $600K salary makes him an attractive insurance policy in case of injury to Tiki......

I'm with Hamp.....I've always been a Dayne supporter, but how many chances can a guy get? You would think going into last Thursday's game he'd go out and try to play the game of his life.......that didn't happen.....

Fassel said it best in an interview when he said that Joyce brings a lot of energy to the game......reading between the lines I think he was taking a backhand shot at Dayne who to me, anyway, didn't seem to bring anything on the field this summer.......

I foresee Dayne being on the Inactive List many a time this season........

Believe it when I see it. Anyhoo it was announced on WFAN that Babers, Stackhouse, Dinkins, Hopkins, Ferrara, Daryl "stonehands" Jones, and Leblanc are cut. Hollis and Kuehl go to IR. Dixon goes to PUP

Bryant must be ecstatic. The only cut on this list that's a little surprising to me is Babers.

Bryant was winning the competition anyway. Even Hollis said he had no idea why he was brought in. If the Giants wanted to upgrade, Hollis was not the man. His KOs are and were short and while he has a nice history of being accurate on FGs he hasn't been automatic lately. If Hollis was healthy though the Giants would've went with him for other reasons.

Hollis has had problems with his back before. Back in the 2000 season, I had him on my fantasy team, and boy did it piss me off when his back went out!

As for the Hollis signing, it does baffle me a bit, as most of the FG blunders were due to the craptacular holders we used..

If that becomes the final list Then I was half right. I had six of those names on my list to be cut. Ferrara was not on my list but I had a feeling he may be cut. It was only a feeling until the Ravens pre season game. I'm sticking with my original back up plan of Washington rotating for Strahan and Osi rotating for Holmes. Barring any injury of course.

The only thing Bryant was winning on was kickoffs. If it came to FGs, Hollis had a slight edge. I thought they would find a way to keep both. Bryant made FGs but Hollis was more consistant between the uprights, where some of Bryant's would be a little right or left.

I thought Darryl Jones might have also been cut but he also made some improvements toward the end of camp. Too little too late I guess.

Bryant isn't bad, but he still makes me a little nervous. Hollis kick-offs sucked, but I think I may have preferred a healthy Hollis for clutch situations.

NFC championship game, 2 seconds to go, a 37-yard field goal will win it for the Giants. Who would you want out there? I don't know.... I think I'd feel more confident in a healthy Hollis in this situation. But, it's Bryant's show now....

37... either, over 40... Hollis.
KOS are important. Remember Blanchard's kickoffs when Daluiso got injured. Regularly falling to 15 yard line. That absolutely killed us. The average starting position was the 37 (actually 36.8) yard line. I think Bryant's KOs will be better this year. He basically played two seasons with no rest in between. Hopefully that 66 average which he had for a good part of the season will last the entire season.
Anyhow if they want a real upgrade do what Hamp suggested awhile back and draft Nugent out of OSU. Hollis and Bryant are near equal in every category except salary.

And Bryant can kick off deeper than the 10 yard line. At least sometimes.....

yea that does bother me. I'm willing to believe he won't shank as many as last year due to his leg not being as tired. That's blind faith though. :P
