For Two Giants Backups, Second Best Is Not Bad By GERALD ESKENAZI EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Aug. 26 - No, Coach Jim Fassel insisted today, the injuries that have sidelined two N.F.L. quarterbacks - the Jets' Chad Pennington and Atlanta's Michael Vick - are not the reason Kerry Collins will not play when the Giants end their preseason against Baltimore on Thursday. Instead, Fassel sounded like a man wrestling with who will be his No. 2 quarterback - a role whose significance has increased because of the injuries to Pennington and Vick. Neither Jesse Palmer, who will start Thursday night, nor his backup, Jason Garrett, has seen much action in the N.F.L. Palmer has thrown only four passes in his career, all while mopping up last season for Collins. Garrett, a veteran, has not started a game since 1999 - the last time he threw a pass. "I have got to see Jesse make the plays," Fassel said of Palmer, who has been considered the backup to Collins. "When I see him throw interceptions in practice, those are on him, and they make me nervous." Palmer threw an interception in today's practice. Fassel conceded that the interception Palmer threw during a 15-14 loss to the Jets last Saturday was partly the fault of a receiver running a route poorly. Over all, Palmer was 8 for 12 against the Jets. He has had a high percentage in the preseason, connecting on 65.6 percent of his attempts (21 of 32), but the Giants have not come close to scoring when he has been in the game. Fassel would not say this was a make-or-break game for Palmer, whom the Giants drafted in 2001, but it seems clear that Fassel is trying to make him earn the backup job. "What I want to see of Jesse is for him not to make the mistakes that will hurt him in the game," Fassel said. Palmer played in college at Florida, where Coach Steve Spurrier used a shuttle system. Palmer did not know whether he, Rex Grossman or Doug Johnson would start the next game - or the next series. Johnson has become Atlanta's starter with the injury to Vick. Grossman was drafted this year by Chicago. Garrett, 37, once the Ivy League player of the year at Princeton, was the good soldier today when asked about supplanting Palmer. "I'm just excited about playing," he said. "Backup quarterbacks have to be ready at a moment's notice." But game preparation counts, too, and the No. 3 quarterback gets little of that in practice. "Generally speaking, the starting quarterback gets all the reps for offense and the No. 2 gets the reps for the scout team," Fassel said. The scout team mirrors the opposition's offense and defense. "It's up to the starter if he wants to give up the reps, and if he does, the No. 2 can give some to the No. 3," Fassel said. |

Palmer doesn't have the excuses he's had in the past. The 2nd string Oline has given him a lot of time. Regardless of Daryl Jones poorly run route, he had an awful game. Getting a measly 3.9 yards a pass which oddly enough isn't even indicative of how bad he really was because he was able to get most of his yards playing against the prevent D in a 2 minute drill. |

Palmer hasn't looked as bad in camp as he has in the games. He wasn't spectacular in camp but made some nice throws and some good defensive reads. It's like a different person in the games. He needs a good game tonight. |
