Short on long snappers

Add another snapper to the Giants' roster, as rookie Carson Dach became the team's 10th different specialist since the start of training camp 2002. New York claimed Dach off waivers from Chicago on Tuesday.

Dach, 6-foot-1 and 253 pounds, was the long snapper at Eastern Michigan for four years and snapped for four punts in Chicago's Aug. 16 preseason game against Denver. He will be the team's temporary replacement for Ryan Kuehl, a long-snapping specialist whom the Giants signed as a free agent this off-season but who is sidelined with elbow tendinitis.

Because reserve snappers Chris Bober (rib) and Nick Greisen (hamstring) also are hurt, the Giants need someone who can snap in Thursday's final preseason game in Baltimore, as well as protection in case Kuehl is not ready for the regular-season opener against the Rams.

Kicked out

Initially, it was waged as a battle between two successful kickers. Then, it turned into a battle between two slightly struggling kickers. Now, there's only one.

Mike Hollis and Matt Bryant are fighting for one roster spot, but Hollis may be finished presenting his case. His back tightened after making a tackle Saturday night against the Jets, which might keep him out of Thursday's game against the Ravens. Hollis had back surgery in 2000.

"It worries me a little bit," Hollis said. "It's one less game I have to kick and do my job."

Feagles feels bad

Punter Jeff Feagles has sympathy for Kuehl, who is unable to do the only job he is getting paid for.

"Ryan is feeling the brunt of it. He's embarrassed, but these things happen," Feagles said.

Starting lineup

The Giants' lineup Thursday will not look anything like what they hope to put on the field opening day against the Rams. Missing will be QB Kerry Collins (sitting out), LT Luke Petitgout (foot), C Chris Bober (rib), RT Ian Allen (groin), CB Will Allen (shoulder), Kuehl (elbow), Shockey (rib), DE Michael Strahan (toe), and Hollis (back).

"I've got so many guys on the list, I can't remember them," coach Jim Fassel said.

Backups failing test

Fassel on his team going 0-3 so far in the preseason: "It's kind of a measure of how your backups are and we haven't done anything with our backups."
