Giants hope to find a spot for Dinkins Wednesday, August 27, 2003 By TARA SULLIVAN Michael Strahan loves it when he's trying to shed a Darnell Dinkins block and can't. Mike Pope loves it when he's teaching a tight end a pass route and Dinkins runs it perfectly. Jim Fassel loves it when he arrives at his office to watch film and Dinkins already is there, coffee percolating and projector running. Everybody around the Giants, it seems, loves Dinkins. "We don't have a guy that works harder than him, that tries harder, he's a good guy, and a great athlete," Fassel said. "He's given me everything he's got." "There's not a play he doesn't go a hundred percent. There's not a practice he doesn't go a hundred percent. It's unbelievable, his stamina and his ability to try and grasp everything and be the best at it," Strahan said. "If knowing your assignments and working hard count, there's no way he's not on this team." In the business of football, however, Dinkins might not make this team. He's the fourth tight end on a team likely to keep only three, and he's playing a position he only began to learn this off-season. He's also an outstanding special teams player who under most circumstances would use that route to the roster. Except the Giants might not have a spot to spare. Because of an elbow injury to long-snapper Ryan Kuehl, a condition that shows no immediate sign of clearing, the Giants will go into the regular season with two long-snappers on their active roster. Include them with return specialist Brian Mitchell, a kicker, and a punter, and there might be no room left for a guy like Dinkins. "They're going to have to make a decision and live with it," said Dinkins, who will be the team's second-string tight end in Thursday's final preseason game in Baltimore, playing behind Marcellus Rivers while Jeremy Shockey sits out with a broken rib. Rookie Visanthe Shiancoe is the team's third-round draft pick. "I understand the business, that it may end up being a numbers game," he said. "I'm just going to go in and play hard like I do all the time. Sometimes if you try too hard, you make mistakes. And you could go out and play the game of your life and still get released." Dinkins might find a job in the NFL if that happens. But even if he doesn't, the Pittsburgh native surely will handle it with the same type of resolve that has characterized his 26 years. Dinkins was raised by a single mother in one of Pittsburgh's most dangerous projects, a place where Bloods and Crips killed each other over gang colors and drugs were dealt in the courtyard. Sports and school were his saviors, and Dinkins, then a star quarterback, earned a scholarship to Pitt. With a degree in administration of justice and a college sports career pocked by coaching changes and his first position switch to safety, Dinkins couldn't immediately catch on in the NFL. Already married with a family of his own, he spent his days dropping his daughter at day care, working as a juvenile probation officer until 11 p.m., and then working out at the gym. The Giants found him on a semipro football team and kept him after he wowed them on special teams last year. His season ended early with a broken foot, but his planning for the future never stopped. Through the NFL's minority coaching program, Dinkins spent the spring working with the football program at Bergen Catholic High School. Every day by 6:30, Dinkins arrived to help with morning workouts and talk to aspiring NFLers about life, football, and getting open on pass routes. "He was just tremendous with our kids," BC coach Fred Stengel said. "There's no doubt in my mind that if he chose to coach, which I believe is in his heart, that he has such a love for the game and for kids that he'll be great." "The attraction is that you have a chance to have an impact on youths' lives," Dinkins said. "A lot of relationships you have with coaches stay with you, whether good or bad. You could ask any athlete about the relationship he had with his coaches and he could recall it. You have a strong impact on players' lives. That's the kind of person I want to be." That's the kind of person Fassel hopes to keep. "It's going to be a hard cut," Fassel said.- What's that supposed to mean? |

Unfortunately I don't think Dinkins is going to make the team this year. He's a tremendous athlete and hands down the hardest worker I've ever seen. But they can't keep everybody and that truly sucks  He should make the practice squad though

What was the reasoning for him back to TE. He's been a safety forever and seems like he'd have a better shot there. |

If I remember right he wasn't a safety long and was moved to TE by the end of camp last year. The reason I remember this is I think he was wearing #41 as a safety and #82 as a TE during camp. Then he got injured. Does that sound familar BBD? He is a much better TE than a safety. He blocks better than Rivers. Rivers can catch better than Dinkins. |

He was a TE at first wearing #89 of all numbers then he moved to SS and then got injured. He was a 3 year starter at SS in at Pitt. Last week there was an article and it mentioned that Fassel considered playing him at S, but was moved back again to TE to give him a fair shot at making a spot on the roster. I just don't see it though. |

Last season Dan Campbell was wearing #89. He didn't get 89 until this season. But you're right he was a TE first and then they moved him to Safety. I knew you'd remember and jog my memory a little. He wasn't good at all at TE last year but he looks better this year. Not starter material but a big improvement. He put on weight this year too for the position |

I remember there was something about his number from last year and Fassel saying something along the lines of them giving him whatever number they had available at the time because even though he (Fassel) didn't know where he was going to play him, he was definitely going to have a roster spot. |

bah it's hard to keep track of his number. He changed it 3 times last year and twice this year. Blue, think it was 41. |

LOL- That's actually a feather in his cap though because he kept playing well, pretty much, anywhere they put him. I think it was 4 numbers last year, Demon. I'm not positive though. |

Could be. He was a qb for a little bit too. I honestly can't remember at what point he began playing musical chairs with numbers and positions, but it seemed like every week after that. anyhow I hope he makes this team one year. It took Ferrara a few years too. |

Yea, I was just thinking that. Maybe they should give him a QB run tomorrow night. Can't be any worse than Palmer and Garrett. LOL Then he'd get #12 again? 12, 82 and 41 are the only numbers I can think of right now. LOL |
