A few weeks ago, somebody asked me who I thought was the most underrated player in the NFL. My answer? Giants quarterback Kerry Collins. Regular readers of this column know I used to say it was Rich Gannon, but he's the reigning NFL MVP, so he's not a secret anymore. But just watching the Giants play the Jets last week, and watching Collins throw the ball down the field, I don't know why people can't see the superior talent he has when it comes to throwing the football. He has great size for an NFL quarterback, moves around at a level that's more than adequate, and he has tremendous arm flexibility to throw the ball down the field with pressure around him. He'll get the ball downfield when he's off balance. There are probably six teams that can really get the ball downfield in the NFL, and the Giants absolutely are one of them. The Giants are aggressive, greedy yardage-gobblers. It's old-style, and it's fun to watch. And I promise you, their receivers love it. Ask Amani Toomer, Ike Hilliard and Jeremy Shockey: Would you rather catch four short passes or two down the field? They're all going to pick the latter. It gives them a better chance to make big plays -- and it's more exciting to the fan. It's the equivalent of a home-run hitter in baseball. That's what you get when you watch downfield throwers. It was a lost art in the National Football League but it's definitely on the rebound. And Collins is leading the way. Regardless of how it turns out for the Giants and for Collins this year, I know many ex-quarterbacks, myself included, hold him in high regard. |

F'n ay, Phil! :worthy: This is the third time Simms has sang his praises.(That I've seen) You'd think sooner or later people would pick up on it. As much as I hate when he gets trashed by "experts" (and opposing fans who know little besides what they see their own team do every weekend) and people continue to underrate him, screw'em. Let them keep thinking he's not a threat and he'll continue to bite them in the ass. |
