Collins to sit out final exhibition

By KRISTIE ACKERT
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Kerry Collins found out yesterday that he would have the day off on Thursday when the Giants close out the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens.
"I have no problem with that," Collins said. "I have no problem at all. I'll be ready."

Jim Fassel said this decision was not one of fear, which would have been understandable after watching the Jets lose Chad Pennington Saturday night. Instead, Fassel wants to see one of his backup quarterbacks step up. Backup Jesse Palmer has been less than impressive so far this preseason, but will probably start Thursday night. Jason Garrett, who has not played in the first three preseason games, would play in the second half.

SHOCKEY BACK, SORT OF: Jeremy Shockey did some individual drills at practice in his first time on the field since breaking a rib against Carolina Aug. 15. The star tight end was limited to non-contact drills. ... Kicker Mike Hollis strained his back in Saturday night's loss.

SNAP DECISION: Fassel is hunting for a long-snapper while Ryan Kuehl recovers from tendinitis in his right elbow. Fassel said the Giants would be looking at the waiver wire over the next 24 hours.

Kuehl watched practice from the sidelines with his arm wrapped in a bandage. "The point is I was brought in to do a job and that's what I want to do," Kuehl said. "Hopefully, we'll get this thing fixed in a hurry."

NUMBERS GAME: The Giants cut 12 players and designated three as waived/injured.

Two seventh-round picks, safety Charles Drake and wide receiver Kevin Walter, were waived.

Also cut were: quarterback Ryan Van Dyke, running back Antonio Warren, wide receiver Derek Dorris, tight end Mark Inkrott, tackle Dion Meredeth, guard Vincent Sandoval, defensive linemen John Frank, Cliff Washburn and David Thompson and linebacker Eddie Strong.

Guard Sean O'Connor, tight end Dan O'Leary and defensive tackle Ahmad Miller were put on the waived/injured list.

I'm all for Jason Garret being our No. 2 QB. Never cared for Palmer.
