So what do we do at RB?

Well who are our backups at this point? I didn't have a doubt that Dayne was our #2. But if he is, that means that either Levens or Joyce is the odd man out right? We can't keep 4 RB's, while three of them don't play any special teams. And let's face it, Joyce isn't going to play special teams on anything but a second KO returner, and I thought Carter would be in that spot. If that's the case, we would then have 3 backup RB's, neither of whom play on specials. Can't do it.

Do we cut Joyce? I can't see it. Levens? Can't see that either. What if Tiki goes down? Then we need Dayne because I can't see any of the other guys filling in on a full time basis.

What to do?

I've been thinking about this as well. Sounding like they'll keep all of them. 2 weeks ago Fassel said Joyce has a spot. Levens running with the first team was awful. He sucks, but Fassel will keep him on. I still remained baffled about those two particular Eagle signings.

I thought Levens had the inside track on #2, not Dayne. It looks like Levens got "#2 guy work" last night. Dayne has barely carried the ball at all in preseason. I'd expect that he would have way more carries by now if he was #2. If not, it seems pretty stupid to hardly play your #2 back at all during the entire preseason.

They did the same thing with him last preseason.

I didn't see the game, but Levens averaged 3.4 per carry. That's the same as what Dayne averaged last season. Dayne had this few carries (what does he have now about 10?) going into the final game of preseason last year? I can't find last year's preseason stats anywhere.

Good because Joyce is a talent. He's going to be our punt returner of the future and perhaps our third down back if we end up with a possession back after Tiki. I see him as a Brian Mitchell......<<cough cough>>......a young Brian Mitchell.

Levens didn't impress me either. He didn't have too much of a chance, but I'd be shocked if he becomes the #2. At best, they'll split #2 work, which I happen to believe would be a mistake. If we use Dayne the way Fassel says he's going to, I believe he could contribute similar to 2000. Not as many yards because Tiki will get 280-300 carries again, but a solid enough backup.

And to be honest, I was happy with the Mitchell signing, but it seems like we'd be fine without him. I think Mitchell will earn his keep in the regular season, but if going on preseason, Joyce looks much better, much quicker.

It is going to be a tough decision......

I wouldn't be surpised whatever the outcome because imho anything can happen......I don't think FA's Levens, Mitchell, or Hollis have nailed down roster spots at all........It wouldn't shock me in the least if any were released (although not likely to happen).....

As a guy who has always supported Dayne I hope that he get a ton of time vs the Ravens next week......I still don't think this guy has been given a fair shot at showing what he can do......

After watching last night there should be no question as to Joyce making the final roster.......

There's no way in hell Joyce gets cut. Fassel loves him, and with good reason. Mitchell may not be exhibiting his PR Extraordinaire skills with our blocking, but he's cheap and, as I've said before, I see him more in a grooming/mentoring position.
But I'll be damned if that wasn't a sweeeet block he laid on that guy. LOL

Levens is another cheap insurance policy if, God for-f'n-bid, something happens to Barber or Dayne. But if it came down to it, and someone HAD to be cut, it would be him. Shame really, even though I'm sure he'd still get picked up elsewhere. I was a big fan when he was playing for the Pack and would like to see him finish out his career somewhat productively. (Ahh... the emotional side of being a football fan...)

That's bad news, Hamp. Dayne averaged 3.4 per in 2000 and sucked down the stretch. I'd rather see what Levens can do, because he's done well in the past and Dayne hasn't. Levens is a seasoned vet, so I don't think there is much reason to be concerned about a "non-stellar" camp or preseason. The guy has been around a while and should be fine once we start the games that count. I know who we better be seeing in there on 3rd and 1.

770 yards is bad news huh? I don't care how you slice it up, 770 yards from your backup RB is GOOD news my friend. Defenses knew that Dayne was getting the ball when he was in there and that's a big reason for the low per carry avg. You can't just go by stats and stats alone. That's a sucker's game.

And again, if Fassel uses him as he said, by running the exact same offense no matter who the back is, then that will benefit the big man.

Get off his jock. You'd think he slept with your wife for Christ's sake.

That makes me wonder.....CT (his full moniker escapes me right now) fell off the face of the earth huh? I used to enjoy our 'Dayne battles'.

P.S. My long-term view of Dayne is that he's never going to be our starting back and probably won't be a long-term solution as the #2 guy either. He's a 3.5 yard per carry guy who has not established himself as a reliable 3rd and short back. If he were a great pass receiver out of the backfield, that would be a different story, but he's average (and that's pushing it) in that capacity as well. Basically, we are probably fucked with any of these guys if Tiki ever gets hurt. #2 RB should be a high priority in the offseason.

This is Dayne's 4th year now and the coaches should have a very good feel for him by now. They still brought in Levens. The only thing that makes any sense to me is that Dayne has looked just as "average" in practices throughout the seasons the last three years as he usually does in the games.

I agree with you there. He'll be a 1,000 yard back for somebody else after this year. :P

Hamp, you know as well as I do that there is a large percentage of Giants' fans who believe that Dayne is a big time bust. He just doesn't strike me as a top tier NFL caliber running back. He's certainly not starter material. I get very excited when Dayne busts a 6 or 7 yard run because I'm so used to seeing 1 or 2 yard runs from him. It sucks for a 1st rounder to be a bust, but the guy just isn't that good.
