I read this over on Giants.com and thought that ya'll might find it a bit interesting ...

GiantGuy

Hanging out after practice Thursday -- many players were just relaxing on the bleachers, talking on cell phones -- and signing for the roughly 20-30 fans who were still lingering (it was 6:30/7:00 PM). Just a really great situation, one that I have never been in where so many players had nothing else to do but wait for a meeting -- so there was no rush, my son would get a signature, I'd take their picture together -- and then you left the guy alone.

Well, then Strahan pulls up -- and a few folks go to rush him -- but he says 'no, no, no signing' -- so everyone leaves him alone, no problem. He sits about 5 rows in front of me for about 15 minutes talking on his cell -- then someone comes up to him -- he repeats he's not signing --and now he seems a bit agitated. Fortunately for us my son had gotten his jersey signed and I got his picture with Strahan the day before -- so we were fine with letting him be. (last year we couldn't get his attention, so my son really wanted to get a picture taken with him this year).

But as he got up to go to the meeting, a little girl asked for him to sign her jersey -- which he did -- and he says' last one'. Then one of these hooples who carries a bag of jerseys with him runs up to him, and Strahan goes into a lecture on why he needs to put a stop to the signing frenzies.

In a stern, almost patronizing tone (like your father trying to tell you something he feels is important when he's pissed) he went into a 5 minute diatribe about 'how you guys are ruining this for the real fans and for the kids. I hate walking into stores and seeing my signed jersey for sale. I hate seeing my stuff for sale on ebay. You guys who come up to me with bags of stuff to sign, you're doing this to make money. And especially you people who send your kids up to me to get things signed, it's like you're pimpin' out your kids. I see you handing your kids things for me to sign. You're pimpin' out your kids. Sometimes you leave your kids out here til 10 at night -- alone -- to try and get signatures'.

Then he attacked a couple of people specifically, one of whom I know is from the area and is always getting football cards signed.

After that the few players who were still outside went in -- it was like a real buzz kill.

But ultimately, he's right on. Of the adults who I see getting stuff signed, I have to believe most are really fans -- but I'll bet there are plenty who are selling this stuff -- and it's a shame. It really does ruin it for the kids.

Strahan needs to realize that he is not God, and cannot determine intent.

Thing is, he's 100% correct but nobody likes to hear the truth from people making millions of dollars per year. Many feel that with the priviledge of being an extremely wealthy athlete, comes the loss of personal opinion and ability to speak their mind about things that are as obvious as the sky being blue. And the unfortunate reality is.....they do lose that right to large extent, because the media would get a hold of something like this and tear the player down as much as they possibly can, because that one individual reporter has a child who wanted an autograph just because he's a Giants fan (as many many others do of course).

Just because it may not be the popular thing to do or say, doesn't mean he's lost the right to say it. Especially in this case where he is soooooo right.

I agree with him.

When I was up there, me and KC were wandering around at the mall and stopped into a few of the sport's stores. In one -well, just about all of them- there was a wall with autographed pics. The one that struck out at me the most was a regular, computer printed photo of Shockey. Selling for $179.99.
I turned around to KC and said "Who the F would pay 180 bucks when they can go up the road and get one of their own for free. You know that's what this guy did. That shit pisses me off."

If it pisses me off (yea, yea, I know... everything does  ), imagine if THEY were to see it.
We know they go to the mall. Hell, someone on THIS board (Doggy?) saw Shockey there last year.

I'm not saying they did see something at the mall, point being it's not beyond the realm of possibilities. Nor is doing an "ego search" on eBay.

Those fuckwads making a profit off the stuff make it harder for us REAL fans who wait in the rain for 2 hours just to get walked past.

He's wrong. Period.

I don't want to get into specifics because it's too much to try to explain in a message board format. All I'll say is I'm at camp most everyday and I'm not a dealer. And a few of the players would not sign for me or my son because they think I am. They've told me to my face that they've seen things they've signed for me on Ebay. I'm not going to say which ones. None of these players can tell the difference between fans and dealers. They go by their own egotistical opinions of who it is they're signing for and what they're going to do with it. If they can't tell the difference then none of them should sign for anybody. They are the victims of their own fame and for that, fans will always be judged in their eyes.

It's not about adults, kids, boys, girls, VIPs, or camp staff.

It's about fans. Who come in all sizes and ages from all walks of life and income levels.

beautiful hats! as I said....none of these players can determine intent! Strahan signed a ball for me, but after a little bit of bitching about "ok, im only going to sign a few."

I mean....so a few people sell their stuff, there are people out there who really want a ball! I got a ball signed by Tiki, Toomer, and Shockey! that could be sold for a small fortune! but you'll never see me sell it! So, the question is...how do they KNOW that I wont sell it?

Its all just them being ridiculously stupid about this stuff. Perhaps if they got paid ten bucks per autograph it would be different.

So, for the most part..they can shut the fuck up, and sign.

Hats, that is awful that someone would tell you to your face that they have seen your stuff on ebay! give me a break...these guys aren't smart enough to get a 600 on the SATs, and they have enough smarts to remember what ball they signed? please!

PS..any one willing to offer me money for a ball signed by tiki, toomer, and shockey? lol

Right on GDogg. The funny thing is I get one football autographed a year. I fill it up and it sits on the shelf at my house. I have five of them. I get a football and my son gets something like a hat or a ball. Whatever he wants.

Hilliard has the best answer for all of this sell it on Ebay nonsense.

Sign for EVERYBODY

I watched him make a reporter who wanted to interview him wait until he was done signing autographs for everyone. The reporter didn't like that, but it didn't look like Hilliard cared

I thought this was about what Strahan got up and said....not what he did or didn't do. And I have no problem with him voicing his opinion. And ya know what, I have no problem if he didn't sign autographs either, for whatever his reasons might be. He's a human being and could make his own decisions. I'm sure nobody here would want anybody to come to their job and tell them what to do and that they had to do it, because it's simply what they want.

Sure, would be nice if everybody signed autographs.....but it's not the end of the world. Let's get a little perspective. You're bickering about grown men writing their names in ink on a piece of paper or merchandise. Life goes on.

Am I the only one who scored well in Reading Comprehension? LOL

Like some of you said, he DOES sign stuff. His diatribe was aimed at specific types of people:

He wasn't knocking everyone, nor did he say he'd never sign anything "just in case".
