NY GIANTS IN TRAINING: Snapper Has Ailing Elbow

REPORTED BY NEIL BEST

August 19, 2003

Albany - Ryan Kuehl figured after the initial wave of curiosity he could fade into relative obscurity. But the newcomer was reminded yesterday that in the post-Trey Junkin era, life never is that simple for a Giants long snapper.

As a group of reporters walked toward Kuehl, he said, "Is Tiki around?" It turned out Tiki Barber was a few feet away, being ignored by the media.

The story was Kuehl, because he sat out to rest a sore right (snapping) elbow. With fellow snapper Dan O'Leary injured and two punters and two kickers needing to get used to his snaps, he had been overdoing it. He called it a "touch of tendinitis . . . A little fluid built up, which is into the nerve a little bit."

The soreness developed gradually, said Kuehl, who never before has had elbow problems but never has had such a heavy workload in camp.

"Then on Saturday I woke up and things weren't right."

Kuehl did not rule out snapping against the Jets Saturday; he knows the kickers want accurate snaps as they try to make an impression.

"Maybe I should've been a little more selfish and said, 'Hey, let me step out of this drill,' " Kuehl said. "But I was trying to work through it, like a football player is supposed to do."

On the Field

One of Jim Fassel's toughest roster decisions will be at fullback. Newcomer Jim Finn might have an edge on incumbent Charles Stackhouse.

Fassel said Stackhouse "shows flashes of brilliance," but added that Finn has been more consistent. Finn has the Giants' only TD in two preseason games.

Off the Field

Receiver Ron Dixon, whose injured right knee has been slow to recover, went to Alabama for a second opinion. If he needs additional surgery, he could miss the season. If not, he could be put on the physically unable to perform/reserve list, making him eligible to be activated after six games.

His time is running out....

Behind the Scenes

Guard Rich Seubert and defensive tackle Keith Hamilton had their fourth fistfight of camp. "They get a little feisty," Jim Fassel said. "Neither one is a guy where it's easy to walk away from something."

I'm loving this Seubert / Hammer thing. Don't know why it amuses me so!

I am LOVING Jimmy Finn! He's good! He may edge out Stack, especially after today's practice! Stack & Dhani Jones got into it BIG TIME, Fassel made Stack run the fences TWICE AND threw his helmet at him as he was screaming at him, walking away! Stack was NOT happy & who was it to go calm him down....SHOCKEY! :o How's that for a twist!

My gut feeling is Dixon won't be around much longer, tho I could see him getting additional surgery, thus not really being a thorn in Fassel's side till next Spring.....

Damn - it sounds like he messed it up more during the jets game. Will miss the opener and maybe more. Here we go again.

We are carrying too many RB's! pick up a LS, and a place kicker that can put it through the endzone on KOs
