About a month ago, we couldn't stop talking about how horrible the New York Giants were. We were all speculating as to whether Tom Coughlin would get fired or not and if his assistants would all be given the axe right with him. A month later and four wins in a row later, not only are none of the coaches on the hot seat anymore, they are poised for another possible Super Bowl run. We all went through this in 2007, so the feeling is nothing new. But it's still very exciting. A lot of people think the Giants have a great chance to win the whole thing in two weeks. It all starts with beating the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. But let's say they do get by the 49ers, advance to the Super Bowl, then knock off either the Patriots or Ravens in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. That would change a lot of things for the Giants. It would almost guarantee Tom Coughlin getting a Hall of Fame spot as a coach, and it would cement Eli Manning's legacy as an elite and dominant quarterback in the NFL. It would also give one of their assistant coaches and defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell, another chance at coaching again. Fewell was brought in to replace Bill Sheridan before the 2010 season after a miserable 2009 season that saw the Giants go 8-8 and look absolutely foolish at times. Fewell brought pressure packages and blitzes back to the defense and while they did fall short of the playoffs in 2010, they were going in the right direction. Do you think Perry Fewell will get a head coaching job in 2012? Yes No Submit Vote vote to see results In 2011, the Giants did give up 400 points and at times, they looked absolutely lost on the field. But in the final weeks of the season, Fewell got the defense re-focused at a time they needed it. Against the Jets, they sacked Mark Sanchez five times, forced two interceptions and recovered a fumble, plus got a safety on Sanchez in a 29-14 beatdown on Christmas Eve. It carried over in to Week 17 in the must-win game for the NFC East title game against the Cowboys, sacking Tony Romo six times, forcing an interception and recovering two fumbles in the 31-14 victory. A month earlier against the Packers and Saints, this defense looked like it couldn't stop a pop-warner team. Now, it was shutting down offenses when they needed to the most. And then, the Falcons game: shutting their offense out with two sacks of Matt Ryan and the Packers: holding a 15-1 team to 20 points, causing four sacks of Aaron Rodgers and forcing four turnovers. Fewell has to get a lot of the credit for turning this unit around. And his job is not over yet, because he could potentially have two more games to go with this defense. Fewell has been impressive enough to a point where he could be considered a hot coaching candidate come February. Fewell could join the likes of Bill Belichick, John Fox and Steve Spagnuolo; all former Giants defensive coordinators who coached tremendous Giants defenses in the Super Bowl and got head coaching gigs as a result. Belichick was the defensive coordinator for the Giants Super Bowl teams in 1986 and 1990 and after Super Bowl XXV, Belichick got the head coaching job of the Cleveland Browns. Fox was the defensive coordinator for the Giants that was the runner-up in 2000, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV, but because he was still an impressive defensive coach, in 2002, got the head coaching job for the Carolina Panthers. And Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator for the Giants in 2007 that upset and defeated the 18-0 Patriots in Super Bowl XLII and in 2009, got the head coaching job of the St. Louis Rams. Fewell could be next to get a shot. Right now, the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts all have vacancies. There's a slight chance that if they haven't picked a head coach by February 5, Fewell's name could certainly come up for conversations. If he doesn't, it's not the end of the coaching opportunities for him. He'll have another year on his contract for 2012, and there's a chance that maybe after the 2012 season, more jobs could open up for Fewell to interview. 93391797_crop_340x234 Marc Serota/Getty Images Some have wondered if Fewell would be a fit for the Giants job if Coughlin ever walked away or retired, but for some reason, I don't see Fewell as the head coach for the Giants. (I still think Bill Cowher is waiting for the job.) I could see him on a team with less pressure to win, with less media scrutiny and a chance to help a team re-build their franchise. A month ago, Fewell was being called out as a coach that needed to get fired. A month later, if everything goes right, he could be the defensive coordinator of a Super Bowl team and the next hot assistant coach in line for a head coaching vacancy. It's funny how a month really changes things. we are not in the Superbowl yet. but this is an interesting topic. |
