Giants re-sign QB Carr; cut three
By Michael Eisen, Giants.com

FEBRUARY 9, 2009

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Giants today re-signed one player, said goodbye to three others and welcomed a new member of their coaching staff.

The Giants extended the contract of QB David Carr and released three players Monday
David Carr will return in 2009 as Eli Manning’s backup quarterback. Carr, who joined the Giants last year, played in three games in 2008.

The Giants terminated the contracts of three veteran players who ended the season on injured reserve– running back Reuben Droughns, cornerback Sam Madison and safety Sammy Knight.

Tom Coughlin filled the final vacancy on his coaching staff by hiring Al Holcomb as the Giants’ new defensive quality control coach. Holcomb comes to the team from Lafayette College. He replaces Andre Curtis, who joined Steve Spagnuolo’s staff with the St. Louis Rams.

Not overly surprising since most of them didn't see any sort of extended play outside of special teams.

I'm more surprised that Carr didn't test the FA waters given the lack of starters on certain teams.

I had this conversation about Carr over on BBI a week or two ago. I said that most, if not all GMs have given up on Carr as a starter at this point. It seemed like I was in the minority. Most felt that he'd get a big contract to at least compete for a starting job, based on a few snaps where he made some nice throws.

I had thought that most GMs base their decisions on the body of work.

Either way, I'm glad we signed him.

I wouldn't fault them for having that mindset. He's had a very up and down career as a starter.

Sad thing is that he has all the physical tools to be a top notch. Mentally, he's...damaged.

I'm thrilled that Carr is back with us because I honestly think if you put him behind the offensive line of the Jets, his career would soar.

No doubt. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he was content without getting his ass beaten in every Sunday, holding a clipboard and collecting a few million dollars per year.

it kind of looks like Carrs agent wasn't being contacted by any teams that needed a QB and he advised Carr that his best deal was to resign with the Giants...he could do a lot worse..

From Ralphie's blog:

In case you missed it, I updated my last blog entry to include the full terms of David Carr’s new deal with the Giants. I initially told you the deal was for one year and would pay him a $1 million salary in 2009. That’s true.

However, he also got a $1 million signing bonus, according to an NFL source, and there is another bonus of $100,000, making the total value of the deal $2.1 million over the one year.
