Obviously this time of the year there is going to be a dearth of news coming from the homefront....... Here's the LINK to the lates blog of Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. For the non-clickers: --Toomer was bitching and moaning last week that he may not want to return to the Giants next season. Apparently the feeling is mutual as it seems the Giants don't want him back. --Looks like a new contract for #10 isn't as imminent as everyone thinks. Even though the sides are far apart it seems it will get done. --Negotiations with B. Jacobs will soon open. Mr. Garafolo feels he and the Giants will reach a contract agreement. |

G-Wilk still has a year to sit around on the Giant's weekly injury report? Wish I had his job! The whole receiver 'issue' has really gotten my curiosity going. Taking Burress and Toomer out of the equation, you have to wonder what the game plan is going into the off season for the Giants brass. Big name? High draft pick? Retread who had little success elsewhere and is on their last leg? Blind hope in the group of young guys? As for the young guys, who do the Giants currently have for next season? Smith, Hixon, Manningham, Moss, Tyree and ? That's not a terrifying group. I'd be curious to see what Manningham could do if he had a full off season to work out with Manning though. A lot of people were high on him after the draft last year for his boom/bust potential. For comedic value, you should read the last paragraph on the analysis page. http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/mario-manningham?id=1030 Edited by Hadron, Feb 6 2009, 06:08 PM.

The one thing I can assure you WON'T happen is your "blind hope" option. No way, no how, no freakin way. My guess is that we'll make as big a run at Boldin as possible, without giving up the farm and paying him a king's ransom after the fact. Even then, I say we still draft a WR somewhat high. Maybe mid rounds. Don't forget that we have picks to deal with. We have the extra 2nd and 5th for Shockey. An extra 4th for G.Wilson compensation and probably yet another 5th (maybe 6th) for Mitchell. From what I understand, if the stars are aligned perfectly and the NFL Gods smile upon us, we could get a 3rd for Wilson. So I'd give our 1st and 5th along with Moss for Boldin. In a minute. I just think the contract that Boldin will want may throw a monkey wrench into the whole equation. Also a snag may be that Arizona simply won't want to part ways and will stand firm for a 1st and 2nd. I couldn't give them a 1st and 2nd. If we can't work it out with Boldin, I'll eat my hat if we don't take a receiver with one of the first two picks. |

I would certainly hope that the 'blind hope' I mentioned doesn't come into fruition. We are fans of the Giants though, so one can never know for sure. FA? Some 'ok' talent, but how much better is it than what the Giants already have? Simply more #2/3 type guys in most instances. Draft wise, the Giants do have some ammunition for possible trades. Unfortunately though, the top tier WR talent may not be around when the 'feasible' trade scenarios come around. I can not see the team trading into the top 10. Then again, this is the year to do it with the large number of draft picks the Giants have. You just don't want it to turn into a Ricky Williams trade. The established WR-trade scenario? Somewhere along the lines of the Roy Williams ----> Cowboys value. Probably more expensive. Boldin is the most 'popular' guy in terms of such a trade, but like you mentioned, his contract demands could throw everything off. And given Boldin's play style, his career may not have a long shelf life after 30. Additionally, you can't forget about the Tony G rumors which have been abound since last season. Given recent history with Tony G and the Chiefs, I don't know what will happen with him. Not only that, but KC has a ton of rebuilding to do and a mid-round pick wouldn't hurt the rebuilding project. Hell, some of the better 'young' TE's as of late have come from round 3/4. (Witten/Owen Daniels). While KC is still looking for the proverbial window, you have to imagine that the Giants may want to exploit the fact that their own 'window' is wide open when it comes to Super Bowl opportunities. Now, I am not saying we should run out and chase him. Just pointing out something that a lot of people already are aware of. |

Like you said, who knows what will happen, but I don't think we will (should) sign one of the 2nd/3rd tier FA's who are out there. I'd much rather spend that money on a big time LB if we're going to spend it. If it's not a trade for Boldin or somebody like Edwards...guys who will automatically be the #1 upon arriving at Giants stadium, I don't see the need for it. If that's the case - and we don't trade for Boldin or Edwards, I can certainly see us trading up 7 to 10 spots to secure Heyward-Bey. The kid has mad skills and wouldn't cost us an arm and leg to move up 10 spots or less (which I think is all we'll need to get Bey and maybe less, like 5 spots). Britt would be the other choice. I really don't see us drafting another small receiver, no matter how "dynamic". I don't think Tony G. is in the picture any longer. It was a nice thought when we had a #1 WR. But that has to be the priority on offense right now. If we don't trade for a WR, I'd expect us to sign one of the FA linebackers. Dansby might price himself out of our comfort zone. Bart Scott might be a good choice. Don't forget Sean Jones. I haven't heard even a whisper about signing him, but we'd have to at least consider it, no? I'm not completely sold on Johnson. Nice player, but if you can have a safety tandem like KP21 and Jones, you must consider it. |

I keep forgetting about Heyward-Bey no matter how many 'good' things I hear about him. Never say never though. You never know what is possible in the league. The problem with Dansby is two-fold: Someone is either going to overpay him or he might get slapped with the franchise tag. Hard to let a guy like him get away. Scott would be available since the tag in Baltimore is likely gonna be slapped on Suggs. I have yet to really see Scott firsthand, so I really do not have an opinion on him. Sean Jones, KP21 and Johnson would be a 'neat' group to have at safety. |
