Goodell Speaks Out On Burress; And why he hasn't been suspended.

Why the NFL has not suspended Plax

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league has not yet suspended Plaxico Burress for his shooting incident because the Giants wide receiver is not a repeat offender. That doesn't mean, however, the league won't take action once a decision is reached in Burress' weapons trial.

The league has at times suspended players before the outcome of their trials (like with Pacman Jones), but those players all have had a history of transgressions.

"We're looking at repeat offenders and we may not wait for the process to conclude when we have repeat offenders," Goodell said. "You can have false accusations once, maybe twice. When you start getting to multiples, you're putting yourself in the wrong position, you're making the wrong decisions in the wrong places. At that point in time, you're reflecting poorly on the NFL itself, your teammates.

"I'm very firm on the fact that everyone deserves the opportunity to be defended, everyone has the opportunity, if they make a mistake, to deal with that within the legal process. We understand sometimes the players are targets and we can't rush to judgment. But again, multiple offenses over a period of time, you're putting yourself in the wrong position and it reflects poorly."

For a number of reasons I'm getting the feeling #17 is back on our roster this season.

sounds like Goodell is putting the ball smack into the Giants front office court as to what is to be done with Plax, if anything.

As it should be.

As mentioned, he's not exactly a career criminal, and let's face it, although the potential to have hurt someone else was there, he actually only hurt himself. Being a pain in the ass to the Steelers isn't exactly a crime, either. LOL

If he doesn't do time, he's back.

if Plax can come back and put the team first then I'm all for it, and it will definitely open up what we do in the draft...

It sounds like the Giants organization, and the NFL in general, will allow him back. But... how does he escape the supposed "3 year minimum sentence" for carrying a loaded unregistered handgun in a night club?

celebrities can afford to pay for high priced lawyers that you and I can't . If any of us did what Plax did we would most likely already be in jail waiting to be sentenced to a few years in prison...

Bloomberg's call.
Basicly.
If he gets off the charges, they have to take him back,as it was "proven" in a court of law that Burress was innocent(but so was OJ),and seeing as he was penalized by the team already, there would be no way they can get rid of him without ramifications.
But I really can't see him getting off seeing as Bloomburg wants to make an example of him

don't all teams have personal conduct clauses in their contracts, it would seem that Plax has pushed the envelope on a few of them...

I'm not so sure, Coughlin I believe still has the final say.I know some players came out in support but there were also some who were just tired of the same person always being a fucking headach.IMO....he should go,does he have talent yes....I just don't think he's worth the trouble anymore. :dunno:

He made a dumbass mistake. I don't doubt he'll be back. He was the straw that broke the camel's back last semester.

its beginning to look to me that Plax will be back next season, I think he'll get some kind of punishment but what and how much I don't know. Now I also felt that we should bring in a big FA wide receiver and cut our ties with him because of his distractions to the team but it looks to me that we can't replace what Plax brings to the offense either in FA or the draft, at least not this year and I get the feeling that the players feel they can win now and that with Plax back the chances are much much better, so Reese and TC will just have to work it out with Plax and get him going in the right direction. Now the only thing that does scare me is Plax's thinking on this thing, will he feel that after losing badly after he left last season that the team now knows how important he is and will that just feed his ego more,, I hope not for the teams sake...

I do. His dumbass mistake also just happens to be a felony. He broke Bloomberg's pet law. Bloomie would certainly have some 'splainin' to do if he let a sports celebrity skirt the "mandatory" minimum three year jail sentence because a local team tanked in his absence. In view of his harshly anti-Plax statements in the days immediately following the shooting, I don't see the mayor blinking. He's already told the Manhattan D.A. to press full-bore for the conviction (i.e., no plea bargain). And then there's ownership. And Tom.
