So what you are saying is that I didn't hear that on the radio this morning. I am wrong that I heard on the radio that Eli's contract is going to be extended. You were in the car with me, so you are "valid" in saying that I didn't hear that & it was an error. Ok. Anyway, after rereading the article again, while there is some speculation at this point, I would say it is fairly close to being signed & sealed considering other quotes in the article, including those from team sources:
I wouldn't put it past the Giants to ante up & give him a big contract. They probably think there are 31 other teams that will be beating down Eli's door to sign him. The fact of the matter is, there will not be. Some of the "lower" teams may be, but if Daddy is still calling the shots like he was a few years ago, Eli won't even entertain offers from those teams! It can't be complete speculation either... they have to get those numbers somewhere! They can't pull them out of thin air - there is some basis for them. All you have to do is watch a Giants game, not just this past Sunday's, to know that Eli is an average quarterback who still has a lot of work to do towards being an elite, hell, even a consistent quarterback. |

Katie how dare you discuss something that was reported from beat writers who cover the Giants 365 days per year. Howwwwwwww dare you!!! To think that we post ideas about a sports team on a sports message board, regarding something that is not yet etched in stone. I myself feel dirty and ashamed. But we shouldn't look back, only forward. Let's try to become better message board members. There goes all my draft speculation from now until April. And if anybody ever posts a prediction here again, you will have 7 years bad luck (as Blue nods her head, "pffft, like I didn't already know that." ) |

Well said ,Eli will get the money and in todays league he deserves it.We would have paid it out of our own pocket had we know what he would do last year.He had a good season this year.... great nope but he work with what he had and still managed to get the # 1 seed in the playoffs .I personaly don't think anyone in any sport is worth that money but if you look at what people are getting yup he deserves it. |

Ben Roethlisberger won a SB before Eli. He got his team the #2 seed in the playoffs. He won his first playoff game. He isn't getting that kind of money. Yet. My apologies Hamp. I won't let it happen again.

I believe it is Peyton. Oddly enough, last year (2007) it was supposedly Bulger at $17,502,040.

Everything I've read said it was Peyton, but his salary was $ 11,500,000 & Favre's was $ 12,000,000. Guess he couldn't be paid less then Peyton, so he got $500K more. ![]() Guess I don't really understand how the "cap value" works.... Ben made $ 2,500,00 but his cap value is $7,971,920. Apparently you have to be an astrophysicst or something to understand the cap.....

They should have made Eli sweat it out and make him earn a new contract. Now I like Eli but until he proves that he can throw in Giants Stadium in December then why extend his contract. And yes I know we will have a new stadium but the damn thing is right next to it so the winds are not going anywhere! |

100 mil? I'm sorry, but even if you asked me just after Eli was handed the Lombardi trophy last year if he should get that kind of money, I'd have looked you in the eye and said no. I'm 100% in his corner and I'm glad we have him, but the guy is not who we thought we were getting. He is average for the most part, and slightly above average at times. That doesn't equate to $100 mil IMO, especially when you look at his home playoff showings. They were ALL horrible |

Sigh, I didn't say that. Based on the article that Hamp linked to, the comment that you said you heard that the contract HAS been extended was not accurate. If you are now saying that what they said on the radio was that is was GOING to be extended, that is much more in line with what the article said.
I already put this direct quote from the linked article: I guess it depends on how one interprets the first sentence in that quote. I only see one quote from team sources that is even close to indicating that the speculated money is accurate: The other quote regarding team sources is: Did I miss one or is there another article that you are taling about. Clearly from all the talk there will be an extension. There is enough comments going on as to the range of salary to show that this is at least the ball park they are going to be talking about. Whether he will be the highest paid and for how long before someone else gets a higher contract time will tell. In any event, one thing for sure that is, as of today, his contract has not been extended.
And they aren't in the best position to know? Even the guys on the Daily News Live show, who were not shy in being critical of Manning's play last Sunday all agreed he is in the top 10 in the league. I think you underrate how many teams would be interested.
You are entitled to your opinion. I have watched as many Giant games as you have during Eli's career and I don't share it. I saw a QB who made a large leap in his game following up on his playoff success of last year, a leap not much different than Simms' post Super Bowl 21 jump. Manning improved in completion percentage, and most significantly in TD to INT ratio. I also saw a much more vocal leader on the field. I have no reason to believe that he won't continue to improve over the next several seasons. Thats my opinion and I would hope you acknowledge that I have as much right to it as you do yours. Golden Boy's last 13 games: @CLE – 196 yards / 57 rating SF – 161 yards / 77.5 rating @Pit – 199 yards / 88 rating Dal – 147 yards / 96 rating @Phil – 191 yards / 81.5 rating Bal – 153 yards / 73 rating @Ariz – 240 yards / 127 rating @ Wash – 305 yards / 88 rating Phi – 123 yards / 73 rating @Dal – 191 yards / 44 rating Car – 181 yards / 95 rating @Min – 119 yards / 76 rating Phi Playoff – 169 yards / 40 rating We all see how many open receivers he misses, how many horrible throws - I mean sub professional-level throws amongst the nice ones he'll come up with; we all see the inconsistency and we also see what I deem as a lack of leadership (yes, largely opinion). But even putting those things aside, when you just look at the numbers and consider this is a veteran quarterback whose supporters biggest battle cry is "he's getting better" when he should be far beyond where he is at this point...., I'm sorry....I don't see how one could be overly impressed with this kid. Here's a veteran of 5 years who people are still talking about his poor mechanics leading to his inconsistency. Is that the sign of a great player? Not to me. That's the sign of a rookie or 2nd year player. Some will say, "this offense doesn't dictate big numbers from the quarterback.". The only reason it doesn't is because the staff had to change gears middle of the '07 season when they finally gave in and realized that this is not the quarterback who they thought they were getting. This is not that superstar. This is a QB who is a manager of the game, one who you have to protect from trying to do more, because he's simply not capable of doing so on a consistent basis. The sign of a "great" QB? No, that's a player who you manage his weaknesses and put enough talent on the field to overcome those weaknesses. Then you can win with him. Good enough to win with when you have enough players around him, certainly not good enough to make others around him better and win games with his arm at the professional level. Definition of mediocre. He probably is a top 10 quarterback in the league. That's more of a sad statement for the level of QB play in the NFL at this point in history, as is it a ringing endorsement for Eli Manning. |

Ah the royal "we". Sorry "we" but he IS getting better. Completion percentage? Yes. QB Rating: Yes Td-Int ratio: Yes. Team won-loss record: Yes. Phil Simms at this point in his career, through 1985,: 52.7% comp percentage; 72 qb rating; 83 tds 81 int's & a 33-33 team won loss record. Guess its a good thing people like you didn't look at those numbers and say " we should be getting more from a QB of his experience and he obviously will never be more than he is". Of course for the rest of his career he completed about 58% of his passes, wtih 116 tds to only 76 ints and a QB rating in the mid-upper 80's. The team went 62-31 in his starts. No this is not a guarantee that Eli will continue to improve. I'm sure there are many other QB's who had different tracks both ways at this point in their careers. |
