Jerry Reese: Door open for Plaxico Burress to return to Giants
BY Ralph Vacchiano
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Sunday, January 11th 2009, 10:30 PM

Giants GM Jerry Reese admitted Sunday that the Giants were a different team without Plaxico Burress. He also said that Burress "absolutely" could return to the Giants next season.

What he didn't say was what has to happen for Burress to return. But the troubled receiver is still under contract with the Giants and Reese told the Daily News a few weeks ago that he plans to meet with Burress in the near future. Reese has never ruled out bringing Burress back.

And Sunday, he made it clear the Giants could've used him.

"Obviously it's hard to replace that," the GM said. "The guy has a presence out there and when you lose that, teams play you differently. Your margin of error is way less when you don't have a guy with that kind of presence out there. Your margin for errors goes way down so you have to capitalize on every opportunity you have."

The Giants didn't do that in their 23-11 loss to the Eagles. They managed just 169 passing yards, but other than a 34-yard pass to Domenik Hixon didn't get much from their receivers.

And since Burress' four-game, season-ending suspension began, the Giants have lost four of five. Eli Manning only completed 54% of his passes (74-for-137) for 783 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions in those five games.

"Obviously the guy has a presence when he's on the field," Reese said. "But do (the Eagles) have a Plax out there? I don't think so. They have good receivers and we have good receivers. They made the plays we didn't."

SPAGS CHASE: Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is now free to be interviewed and possibly hired by any NFL team that's interested. He has been interviewed by the Jets, Lions, Broncos and Browns. According to a report, the Lions would like to bring Spagnuolo in for a second interview this week. Last night, ESPN reported that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had reached an agreement to coach the Broncos.

TOOMER FAREWELL? In what could be his final game as a Giant, Amani Toomer caught just two passes for 26 yards, and none until midway through the fourth quarter. Toomer, who can be an unrestricted free agent in March, did not speak to the media after the game.

NOT SO SNEAKY: Manning may have plunged into the wrong gap on his fourth-and-inches failed quarterback sneak with 12:39 left in the fourth quarter, but the guys who have led the Giants' power rushing attack all season couldn't believe they couldn't help him get one yard.

"There's no excuse for that," said center Shaun O'Hara. "The quarterback sneak is as elementary as it gets. To not be able to get a few inches on fourth down is inexcusable." ... This was the first game in NFL history that ended with a score of 23-11.

I would have paid Burress out of my own pocket to have gotten him on the field yesterday, even just for the 2nd half.

We needed him yesterday. If you can honestly say otherwise, you don't know what you're talking about. He is a match-up problem that teams have to game plan for. Stepping onto the field makes him a threat, even if he doesn't catch the ball.

They were even talking about this down here in Houston today.

Anyone who can't see the difference with or without him on the field is a dunce. Especially in dimwit (Gilbride's) offense.

Let them have him,the Giants don't need a cancer on the Team,we did well against Carolina without him we can do well with better coaching .

They do need a number one receiver...whether it is Burress or not I will let others decide but it was apparent yesterday nobody had the talent to get open but even worse was our QB's lack of accuracy,,,,,,,,I will not cry if he does come back.....

Why the hell would Houston want him? Between Andre Johnson and Kevin Walters (ex-Giant sup) they are set.

What I was referring to in my earlier post was the fact that the radio show I was listening to this morning made mention of this very same article, not that they wanted him down here. It doesn't take a genius to realize the sort of player that the Giants sorely lack at the WR position be it Burress or some other player.

On the subject of the Panthers, is it really wise to brag about a team that got shit stomped by the Arizona Cardinals? It would have been the second time in the season were it not for the Cardinals stumbling as they often do. Much like what happens every year, the team representing the NFC South was exposed as being just another bump in the road to which ever team got the 'joy' of playing them. Remember that happening last year in the playoffs? I certainly do. It was just a different team getting steam rolled.

I wouldn't say we did well against Carolina without him. Did we win? Yes. But it was another nail-biter that had to go into overtime!

Can we win without Plax? Absolutely. Is it easier to win with him? Absolutely. As others have pointed out, over & over & over again, he is something that needs to be game-planned for. He often draws double coverage, freeing up other WRs to get passes. If he doesn't draw double coverage, he can make those odd-ball, acrobatic plucks out of the sky. Sure, sometimes he can't make the easy catches that he should make, but he ususally makes the difficult ones! His height advantage alone was a help. The rest of our WRs are munchkins in comparison!

I'm sure if he comes back next season, there will be even more stipulations placed on him. He can't just saunter back in & pick up where he left off.

IMHO,No ...he doesn't deserve one,so we bring him back and Eli and the rest of the team count on him for what....to not come to practice and get another 2 game suspention,no.Take a draft pick and find a nice young reciever who'll be here awhile and have him work with Eli...............PLENTY of other teams are doing well without a 6-7 idiot as there # 1.People are forgetting only by the grace of God he didn'y kill himself ot someone else.nope sorry no.

P.S.

Remember this isn't a second chance ..it's a 4th or 5th easy.

Burress in court over car damage
Comment Email Print
Associated Press

LEBANON, Pa. -- Plaxico Burress is in court again.

A civil trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday in Pennsylvania to determine how much the New York Giants wide receiver will have to pay in damages over a car he leased that ended up being impounded by New York City police.

New York police said Tuesday that they impounded the car in August 2005 in connection with a shooting in the Bronx. Arrests were made, but the records were sealed and police gave no other details about the incident.

Court papers in Pennsylvania say a Lebanon County car dealer allowed Burress to borrow a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche worth more than $36,000 in exchange for Burress agreeing to sign autographs at promotional events.

"I thought it would be good for my business," the dealer, Frederick Laurenzo, said in an interview Tuesday.

But about a month after Burress received the car, Laurenzo said he received a call from police in New York, who told him they had impounded it in connection with a crime. So he called Burress and told him to call police -- but the police never heard from Burress and Burress never returned another one of Laurenzo's calls, Laurenzo said.

Laurenzo filed the civil complaint in September 2006, seeking restitution and accusing Burress of breach of contract because he never showed up to sign autographs and let someone else drive the vehicle. Laurenzo said it took him a year to get the vehicle back from the police.

The complaint did not disclose to whom Burress loaned the vehicle or the reason police impounded it.

After Laurenzo put a lien against Burress' house in Virginia, the sides agreed to an arbitration. A three-lawyer panel awarded more than $22,000 to Laurenzo last year, but Burress appealed.

Burress' lawyer, Matthew T. Croslis, said Tuesday he did not want to elaborate on the details of the case, but he acknowledged that Burress is responsible for some damages. The jury will have to decide how much, he said.

The star receiver who caught the game-winning pass in last year's Super Bowl has been embroiled in controversy for months. Burress was charged with two counts of illegal weapons possession after he accidentally shot himself in the right thigh at a Manhattan nightclub on Nov. 29.

Burress, who received a five-year, $35 million contract extension from the Giants in September, turned himself in on the weapons charges and was released on $100,000 bail. He is due in court on those charges March 31.

After the self-inflicted shooting, the Giants suspended Burress, 31, for the remainder of the season.

In December, Burress was sued in Broward County, Fla., for an accident last May in which he allegedly drove his $140,000 Mercedes-Benz into the back of a woman's vehicle. The woman's attorney later said that Burress had failed to pay the premium on his car insurance, which had lapsed three days before the wreck.
