Lions get permission to interview Giants’ Spagnuolo Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Steve Spagnuolo Detroit gave little reason for its to fans to be hopeful this season. But the team is doing what it can today to try to turn it around for next season. The Lions requested and received permission Monday to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is regarded as one of the pre-eminent coaching candidates this offseason. Spagnuolo must interview with the Lions this week, during the Giants’ bye, before New York ramps up its preparations for a divisional playoff game next Sunday. Plus, the Lions are not the only interested team. The Browns also plan to ask for permission to interview Spagnuolo, if they haven’t done so already. St. Louis is also thought to be in the mix. Spagnuolo might be more apt to make the jump this season from coordinator to coach; last season he was a finalist for the Redskins coaching job before withdrawing from consideration. Now he is under consideration again, and just as coveted. |

Why in the world would Spags leave us for that, now the Browns might be different!

by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger Monday December 29, 2008, 7:12 PM Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com is reporting the Jets have asked the Giants for permission to interview Steve Spagnuolo. The Giants are not confirming whether any teams have made requests to talk to Spagnuolo. Remember what I said earlier: the Jets are one situation to watch carefully because of Spagnuolo's East Coast ties. |

Spags isn't a moron. No way he goes to Detroit, money be damned. He will, however, be the head coach of either the Jets or Bills shortly. |

As I said over on the General NFL page don't dismiss the Lions job as a longshot (not just for Spags, but any coaching candidate). If they can pull their heads out of their rear ends over there and get themselves a good scouting dept. the Lions could make some noise. I'm not sure if this is official, but they way I calculate it they're going to be picking 1, 22, 33, 65, & 84 (3 Rounds) in what I understand is a very deep draft coming up. The NFC North is putrid and with some smart player moves the Lions can be next years Dolphins. |

I was listening to WFAN all afternoon and someone (forgot who exactly) brought up the point that the next JET HC is going to depend on whether or not Favre returns. The feeling is that if he comes back there's no way the Jets hire a guy like Spagnuolo.......in other words a guy that Favre is going to walk all over ala Mangenius. If Favre comes back the Jetsies will go after a guy like Cowher.......someone with enough stature to put Favre in his place. The feeling was that when Favre played in the system the Jets were winning, but then he decided to wing it his way and the team fell flat on its face the last 5 weeks of the season. Hell I don't know if any of that is true............I report you decide. |

In all due respect, I don't see an organization making a long term decision and one with such importance as a head coach, dependent upon an over the hill quarterback who will be with the team one more season - if he makes it through another season. I'm not saying the Jets always make the right decisions, but I think that thought process, whoever it was on the FAN, is ridiculous. One thing in our favor to keep Spags is that Cowher is out there. All things considered, Cowher will take the most 'promising' job out there (of course he'll be the front runner for any job), assuming that the definition of "promising" is the same for all available coaches. I'm just not sure every coach would want a project like the Lions. The culture of losing is something that would and should keep a lot of guys away. I tell ya, if it weren't for the owner, I actually think the Raiders job would be a decent one if they decide to go in another direction. They have built a pretty darn good defense - they have a really nice one/two punch at RB - they've built a decent oline and they'll have high picks to further bolster that line in the next draft and get another receiver. I think they'll be a contender much sooner than Detroit. Even though I don't believe in the QB in Oakland. By the way, word around town is that Parcells wants to coach again. No joke. |

Just saw on the ESPN Scroll that the Raiders want to ask permission to interview Gilbride seeing as nobody else wants that job, maybe there is a God Wonder if the Tuna comes back to NY(though rumor is that Cowher is interested in listening to the Jets) |

They can't, and they won't. I feel sorry for the young player talent they do have. Ownership and management is simply PAH-thetic. Just yesterday, Ford fired Marinelli and nearly his entire staff, but promoted his ol' buddies Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew to Team President and General Manager, respectively. The entire scouting department was retained. Detroit fans are despondent. This is worse than the '60s-'80s Mara regime. Ownership simply does...not...care about crafting a winning product. Any young golden boy coordinator would be an ass to risk tarnishing hard-earned cred signing onto that ship of fools. Losers is as losers does. Geno, I think you and I have walked this planet about the same number of years. Have the Detriot Lions ever been much more than a laughable, inept, after-thought? Even during the Sanders era they were nothing more than one-trick pretenders. Nine playoff appearances, one (1) playoff win, since 1957. Fifty one years. Nine playoff appearances, five coming on the legs of one of the supreme talents the league has ever seen. Want to throw up a little in your mouth? Look at this record of futility. |

Somehow I see him going to the Jets. That way, he and his family don't have to move, and if Favre is gone, he can structure the team how he wants and continue to be defensive-minded. |

I have a feeling Cowher will take the Jets job. edit: Oooookay, now it's being reported that Cowher won't interview for the Jets job because he wants more control. Hell, Mike Tannenbaum is doing a bang up job there. Edited by 27Hampton, Dec 30 2008, 11:15 AM.

According to league sources, early indications are that two of the hottest coordinators on the market, New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will be out of the Rams' price range. -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/rams/story/9C87A6EDC5EB5D718625752F000C2B8A?OpenDocument |

If the Rams can keep Steven Jackson on the field and find some consistent play at QB, this is a team that can compete in the NFC West. Donnie Avery and Torry Holt can be a pretty nifty combination if they didn't have to deal with Marc Bulger/Trent Green. |
