Heard a stat in yesterday's broadcast that just about blew my mind. Before the Giants win over ARI, only once in League history (in 1970??) had a team won five consecutive games over teams with winning records at the time played. Can't remember who the other team was, or the exact year, but that just seems amazing to me. |

Seems amazing to me, too... and not in a good way. I'll take it, though. Great article, Gene. |

Forgot to paste for the non-clickers... WHO'S GONNA STOP THIS BLUE STREAK? By MIKE VACCARO Last updated: 6:49 am November 24, 2008 GLENDALE, Ariz. - They come at you wave after wave, name after name, some that spend weeks hidden on depth charts, some among the most famous in football, some that even Tom Coughlin probably has trouble identifying without a flip card, some that seem to fall out of the sky and hit the grass ready to do a 4.4 40. "It's unique," Eli Manning Eli Manning said, shaking his head in wonder, maybe half an hour after the Giants New York Giants had throttled the Cardinals 37-29, their sixth win in a row, their fifth straight since entering what was advertised as the killer part of their schedule. "You don't see a lot of teams where so many guys make contributions." And it is every week. Sure, Manning had a tremendous game. Justin Tuck Justin Tuck was terrific. Those are the old stand-bys. But there also was Derrick Ward, filling in for Brandon Jacobs and grinding out 69 yards with a score. There was Domenik Hixon, replacing Ahmad Bradshaw as the Giants' primary return man, who twice sucked all the air and all the momentum out of University of Phoenix Stadium with runbacks. There was even Madison Hedgcock, the fullback, grabbing a TD pass from Manning and then executing one of the worst celebrations you'll ever see. On and on they come, wave after wave, name after name. Jacobs is out? Plaxico Burress had to sit after a few pain-filled plays? Did anyone even notice they were missing? "It's kind of the way this team has developed in terms of the talent we have and the ability of the guys to say, 'OK ... we have to play at a higher level and the next guy that comes in has to do the job,' " Coughlin said. So the Giants improve to 10-1, and they pick up another game on the NFC thanks to Carolina getting spanked by the Falcons. There was a time when the rest of the league tried to talk itself into believing the Giants weren't as good as their record, rambling through September and rumbling through October on a healthy diet of Rams, Bengals, Seahawks and Niners. How would they do once they started playing the varsity? Nobody wonders that any longer, not with the Giants slapping the varsity around like George S. Patton. Not after strafing the Steelers and clobbering the Cowboys and eviscerating the Eagles and roasting the Ravens and, now, creaming the Cardinals in back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back weeks. Yesterday's effort was especially satisfying, because it came at the expense of a team that believed it was copying the best of the Giants' blueprints, lying in the weeds, with explosive weapons and confident players who've believed in themselves long before their record indicated they should. Yet the Cardinals never did get a step ahead of the Giants, and you have to wonder: If the Cardinals are one of the teams forced to march through the Meadowlands in January, do you really think that pinball-machine offense is going to stand up to the bluster of the wind and the muster of the Giant defense? "Obviously, they've played tremendously in the past year and a half; that's why they're the best team in the NFL," said Warner. It isn't supposed to be this way anymore. Teams aren't supposed to be this deep anymore, they weren't supposed to be armed with wave after wave and name after name, the famous and the obscure teaming to take turns splattering you against the windshield of their bursting, bustling bandwagon. Good luck to the team who chooses to play chicken with it. michael.vaccaro@nypost.com |

Kenny Albert apparently mispoke during the Cardinals telecast. Here is the poop, from Newsday's Tom Rock: Are the Giants on the best winning streak in NFL history? Almost. They've faced and beaten five straight teams with winning records - something they haven't accomplished since 1929 - and have a chance to make it six Sunday against the Redskins (7-4). Last year, the Colts won six straight over winning teams. The record for consecutive wins over winning teams is seven, by the 1970 Vikings. If the Giants are to reach that mark, they'll need some help. Even if the Giants win this week, their streak would end if the Eagles (5-5-1) lose to the Cardinals on Thursday because Philly would have a losing record coming into their Dec. 7 game at Giants Stadium. |
