Here's a clip of a play that gets very little attention when it comes to Giants folklore. This may have been THE play that ignited it all.

4TH & 17

And of course what would this thread be without a clip from that wild Giant Zone Super Bowl XXI party back in '86?

Way to go Gene.... only somebody like U or I would remeber 4th and 17 vs Minn. I also remeber after the game Parcells declaring in an interwiew that the Playoff race "was on"

Sure was! I thought it was kinda cute the way Blue and KCG wore matching outfits. I forget who the babe in blue was.........might've been Cody?

Ah Jim I remember it like it was only 22 years ago.

Me being the pessimist and throwing things at the TV all day. You being the optimist kept telling me to calm down the Giants were going to pull the game out.

We then made a side bet on the outcome of the game.

I lost and had to run up and down the street bare assed screaming the Giants are gonna go to the Super Bowl.

You locked the door and called the cops..............

"4th & 17". Aaah, Geno, you make me smile. I don't think there's a Giants fan who lived through what became the magical season of 1986 who doesn't get douche chills on just hearing the phrase. I was at my law school buddy Jay Katz' house.

'Member the '86 Mets? How it seemed like every game, no matter how far down or how late, they'd find a way to win? That's the way we wanted to feel about the '86 Giants. But, hell, we were lifelong Giants fans. Even though they were 6-2 coming into the Vikings game, I hadn't yet dared to allow myself unbridled optimism.

After losing a heartbreaker to Dallas in the season opener, Big Blue won five straight, the first four of that run in pretty bland, workmanlike, unspectacular fashion. They did come back from 17 down at home to defeat the Saints 20-17, but wtf does coming back from 17 down to the '86 Saints tell you about your team?

I almost let that "special feeling" seep into my consciousness after they thumped the Eagles two weeks later, but was whipped back to reality when they went out to Seattle and Simms threw 4 INTs, en route to a 12-17 loss to the Seahawks.

After the Seattle debacle, the Giants won three straight against Division foes, knocking off WAS, DAL and PHI, again, on the strength of the defense and Joe Morris' legs. Simms, during the stretch, was horrible. He'd done nothing to take the offense on his back; certainly nothing to lead a lifelong Giants fan to think that he'd complete the most important pass attempt of his life in the waning seconds of what looked to be just another despicable 2 point loss along a lifetime of despicable 2 point losses.

And then, a star was born. 4th & 17. That play, that one play, stamped that team Destiny's Children in my mind. I let it all in. I let myself believe that we had something truly special. I began to think... God forbid... Super Bowl!

Geno, I don't know if your "memory" of sharing that game with Jim is true, but it made me laugh because that's the exact dynamic that was at work between me and my pal Jay as the Giants lined up to take on 4th & 17. I was harrumphing around in lifelong Giants fan pessimism about how they'd draw for 12, or hit McConkey for 15. Jay just looked at me with the wise calm of Yoda and said, "Relax. Watch. They're gonna get it." He just knew Simms would complete a first down pass. I just knew that the Vikings secondary surely would defend the line-to-make to the death. And then, a star was born. Bobby Freakin' Johnson? Heh.

Well, the Giants, of course, did not lose another game. Phil went on to to win the Super Bowl MVP trophy following the greatest passing display ever put forth on the game's grandest stage. The Giants ... the Giants! ... were Champions of the world. And I could die in peace. Hard to believe that was 22 years ago. For me, for us, it might as well have been yesterday. And we've, really, been given so much more to take to our happy coffins in the 22 years since.

GO BLUE!
