2022 Draft: The First Round

1st Overall: Vesa Kaihlavirta - Drafted by the perpetually rebuilding New York Rangers, Kaihlavirta is a player to build a franchise around. A top line forward with both scoring ability and strong defense. He should be able to form a strong duo with former 1st overall Pavel Kartsev. Expect to see Kaihlavirta near the top of the scoring race for many season and given a lot of hope to the diehard Rangers fans before they are crushed when the GM feels he is past his prime and is traded in roughly 4 seasons.
Assests: Shooting, hitting, consistency
Flaws: Skating (basically has an anchor permanently attached to him)
Career Potential: 1st line forward, perennial allstar, Weimers rival for the GM's undying love.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

2nd Overall: Vladimir Alyabyev - Not letting the oppurtunity pass them by, the Montreal Canadiens scored a big piece in their goal of building a playoff team by netting Prince Ali. No stranger to the opponents goal crease, Ali Baba excels at the offensive side of the game and should trump the 1st overall pick when it comes to scoring. While his defensive game pales in comparison to his offense, he still will be competent in his own end whenever he feels like venturing back there.
Assests: Shooting, playmaking, checking, having a witty genie as a best friend and a spicy dish of a wife
Flaws: Stickhandling, hitting
Career Potential: 1st line forward, Art Ross and Rocket Richard trophy's
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

3rd Overall: Knut Klosovsky - Deciding a franchise goalie is overrated, the New York Islanders moved out scape-goat Kiril Brezjin and landed this pick to grab the meanest Knut around. While his offensive skills are strong for a dman, it will be his defensive play that Klosovsky will make his living off of. If an opposing player happens to find themselves near the Islanders crease, he can be expected to possibly lose a nut.
Assets: All aspects of defensive play
Flaws: Not dirty enough, while avoiding penalties is usually good, it is also good to play dirty at times
Career Potential: 1st line dman, top PKer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

4th Overall: Kyle Miller - Deciding future picks are overrated, the Islanders again moved into the top 5 to draft highly skilled offensive dman Miller. Despite having the size and strength of GM Mike Allen's kids, Miller is adept at using positioning to make up for his lack of physical play to still be a solid defender, while having very strong offensive skills. He will have to be paired up with a strong defender so he won't be abused to much by opposing powerforwards however.
Assets: Offensively solid, checking and positioning
Flaws: Stopped growing after grade 9. Weighs less then the average girl.
Career Potential: 1st line dman, top PPer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

5th Overall: Vsevolod Satin - Los Angeles nabbed the toughest SOB in the draft with the 5th pick. There is nothing soft about this Satin. He will terrorize opponents defense with his physical play while simultaneous be his goalies best friend by acting as another defenseman out there. Has the ability to play as either a compliment on a scoring line, opening up space for his linemates, or as a dominate shut-down forward on a checking line.
Assets: Hitting
Flaws: For a mean defensive forward he fights like a little girl
Career Potential: Top 6 forward or great checker, top PKer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

6th Overall: Kirill Gladishik - Raising several eyebrows, The Ottawa Senators moved back in the draft out of the top spot and a guaranteed top line forward, instead grabbing the highly skilled, yet sometimes frustrating Gladishik. Kirill is what he is, and skilled but inconsistent goaltender. Time will tell if he follows the path of Tiptmann to become a top goaltender or down the path of other similar goalies like Strand and Slezak and be the bane of the team.
Assets: Highly skilled
Flaws: Takes too many games off
Career Potential: Starting goaltender.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

7th Overall: Daryl Griffith - Wither their second pick of the draft, the Kings drafted what should be a good compliment to Satin in Daryl Griffith. Offensively strong, Griffith should put up a lot of points. However his defensive game is nothing to write home about so he will need linemates strong in that area to form a top line.
Assets: Shooting and playmaking
Flaws: Poor positioning
Career Potential: Top line forward.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

8th Overall: Ismo Markkanen - After getting the shakes when 3 picks went by that didn't involve them, the Islanders again moved into the top 10 to draft the other highly touted goaltender Markkanen. While not as flashy as his counterpart, Markkanen is a blue-collar type of player who goes to work, does his job and goes home. He may not ever carry a team on his back, but he also never leaves his team up the creek sans paddle.
Assets: Always gives a strong effort
Flaws: Lacks top end skills
Career Potential: Starting goalie
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

9th Overall: Brantt Skrudland - More or less the opposite of the Canadiens first pick in the draft, Skrudland won't find himself near the leader board for any offensive category. However it is his defensive play that he was drafted for and will be a top checking forward. With solid defensive skills and strength on the puck, he should be a take-away machine and give opposing scorers fits.
Assets: Defensive game, stickhandling
Flaws: Peewee level shot and passing
Career Potential: 3rd line shutdown forward, top PKer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

10th Overall: Derek Seymour - Carolina landed a strong defensive dman by drafting Seymour. Seymour's main strength is demolishing opposing forwards with viscous hits. Won't ever be known for his offensive skills
Assets: Hitting
Flaws: Prone to taking nights off
Career Potential: Top 4 dman
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

11th Overall: Juan Busey - A late season surge moved Calgary out of the top 10. With no goalie left worth taking, Flames fans will have to endure another season of Strand. However they will soon grow to enjoy the offensive skills of Busey. In addition to his offense, Busey is not afraid to throw the body around and crash and bang in front of the net.
Assets: Solid offense, hitting
Flaws: Mediocre positioning, checking, tires easily
Career Potential: Top 6 forward.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

12th Overall: Valeri Zubkov - Columbus adds to their already solid defense by drafting the solid Zubkov. Defensively Zubkov is very strong, however don't ever expect him to venture out of his own zone too often as his offensive skills are more or less non-existent.
Assets: Always in the right place at the right time
Flaws: Shooting? Passing? Stickhandling? What are these mysterious things you speak of?
Career Potential: 3rd line dman, good PKer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted Image

13th Overall: Cam Uffren - Anaheim nabs a very strong defensive forward, although rumours abound that he shouldn't start looking for a place in sunny Anaheim as he will be a Blackhawk. Uffren won't ever put up much in the way of points, but should be an anchor for a teams checking line.
Assets: Hitting machine
Flaws: Offense
Career Potential: Checking line forward, top PKer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

14th Overall: Michael Moller - With their 3rd pick in the draft, Los Angeles continues to add to their forward corps by grabbing Moller. Another compliment to Satin, as Moller is as soft as satin. However his goalscoring ability should find him leading the Kings in that category for many seasons..
Assets: Awesome shot, good positioning, good stickhandling
Flaws: Soft as butter, defensive play is poor at best
Career Potential: Top 6 forward, good PPer.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted Image

15th Overall: Vitaly Vengerov - The Canucks shake things up by drafting the overage Vengerov. Vengerov will be a solid offensive forward for the Canucks if he can find a spot on their roster.
Assets: Playmaking
Flaws: Average defensively
Career Potential: 2nd line forward.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

16th Overall: Francis Aucoin - The Rangers nab a very serviceable offensive defenseman at the start of the second half of the first round in getting Aucoin. While he might not be the type of defenseman you put out in the final minutes when you have a lead, he definitely is the type you put out in the last two minutes when you are down. Aucoin will live and die by his offense as defensively he is nothing special.
Assets: Great shot
Flaws: Weak on the body, possibly prone to depression due to being way down on the Leibowitz List of Love.
Career Potential: 2nd pairing dman, top PPer.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

17th Overall: Kirill Shalnov - In what seems to be the most common type of player, the Minnesota Wild select yet another defensive forward in this draft. Shalnov is a hard hitter whose offense isn't good, but not totally inept. Wouldn't be a player that ever makes much noise but can anchor the bottom 6 and make the odd highlight real hit.
Assets: Hard hitter, good checker.
Flaws: Out of position a lot, skates with an anchor
Career Potential: Bottom 6 player
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

18th Overall: Albert Kasatonov - Surprisingly Toronto continues to polish their draft horseshoe by landing solid defenseman Kasatonov this late in the first round. While he will never be a star, Kasatonov displays a very strong two-way game and would be a solid part of any defensive rotation.
Assets: Solid defensively, good with the puck on his stick
Flaws: Prone to taking nights off
Career Potential: 2nd pairing dman
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

19th Overall: Willy Lounaev - Colorado grabs the first of the Lounaev's. Willy is a playmaker who is always in the right place at the right time. His lack of a physical game likely scared many GM's away, but paired with the right linemates he could make some noise. Will he be reunited with his twin though?
Assets: Playmaking, positioning
Flaws: Poor physical play, prone to nights off
Career Potential: 2nd liner
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

20th Overall: Szczepan Rasimowicz - The Senators continue their rebuild by grabbing the rarest of rare things this draft, a defensive forward. While the Polish Prince won't ever be counted on to lead the team offensively, he should be able to contribute shutting down the oppositions forwards.
Assets: Solid defensive play
Flaws: Not very comfortable in opponents end
Career Potential: Bottom 6 forward
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

21st Overall: Martin Ariakis - Nashville takes a chance on Ariakis. While he will never strike fear into opposing forwards Ariakis does have the offensive flair to find a niche in the league. Paired with the right defensive partner Ariakis has the potential to surprise some GM's with his play, however they likely won't lose to much sleep after watching him trying to fight off an opposing forward streaking down the ice.
Assets: Good shot fromt he point, good with the puck on his stick
Flaws: Has difficulty hurting a fly
Career Potential: PP specialist
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

22nd Overall: Lyle Shuve - After taking a defensive forward with their first pick, Anaheim goes balls to the wall offense with their second pick. Shuve has the potential to rack some high scoring seasons with his offensive skill. Just don't expect anything else from him.
Assets: Great playmaker, great with puck on his stick
Flaws: Prone to nights off, needs a map to find his own end, unsure if he just doesn't get a long with his goalie or if they have just never met
Career Potential: 2nd line forward, PP specialist
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted Image

23rd Overall: Alexandre Lavoie - The Panthers take a chance on the skilled but very frustrating Lavoie. He has the skills to stick in the big leagues but does he have the heart? Rumours abound that the Cats are already looking to move him. Rumour has it that Wilson wasn't too happy that the team drafted a "frenchie".
Assets: Big hitter, solid two-way game
Flaws: Lack of work ethic
Career Potential: 3rd liner or career minor leaguer
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted Image

24th Overall: Kirill Panov - The Rangers grab the most talented player left in the draft. However the question is will Panov ever live up to the brilliance he has flashed? Given the nurturing nature of the GM, it is quite possible. It is also possible that he will be shipped off for a future draft pick once he reaches 20.
Assets: Great playmaker, solid defensively
Flaws: Takes many a night off
Career Potential: Top 6 forward
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

25th Overall: Lance Helmuth - Minnesota adds a two-way dman to their prospect pool with the selection of Helmuth. While Helmuth doesn't have the offensive skills to be run the PP or the defensive skills to be a top shut-down dman, he is skilled enough both ways to easily find a role on the team.
Assets: Great passing, positioning
Flaws: Terrible back-checking
Career Potential: 2nd line dman
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

26th Overall: Pavol Rada - Taking a chance on a raw prospect, the Kings select defenseman Rada. While he is not close to ready for the big show, this may work out to the Kings advantage as they already have more then enough prospects to fill their junior quota. With a little nurturing and patience, Rada can become a solid defensive dman and a solid part of the Kings future.
Assets: Solid defense, passes the puck well
Flaws: Is a project
Career Potential: 2nd/3rd line dman.
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

27th Overall: Sam Sutter - New York follows up LA's project pick with one of their own in selecting Sam Sutter. Much like Rada, Sutter is still aways away from being close to the NHL however with some time he can turn into a decent two-way player. However rumours abound that his tenure as a Ranger will be very short lived after footage of him making a crack about Bo Kuban at the draft combine surfaced.
Assets: Good shot, good with puck, solid defensively
Flaws: Doesn't like to pass the puck, is a project
Career Potential: Bottom 6 forward
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted Image

28th Overall: Marten Dahlberg - With their 5th pick in the first round, the Kings took defenseman Dahlberg. A player not known for his work ethic, Dahlberg has the skill to be a decent two-way dman if he can ever put it all together.
Assets: Good hitter, good with the puck
Flaws: Prone to many off nights
Career Potentail: 3rd pairing dman
Pick Rank:Posted Image

29th Overall: Ralph Osgood - With their 1st selection in the draft the Oilers selected scorer Osgood. Osgood should supply the Oil with a bit of a scoring punch while not being too inept defensively. While his preparation for games has been questioned, his shot has not.
Assets: Big shot
Flaws: Not the best effort night in and night out
Career Potential: 2nd line forward
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

30th Overall: Jonas Stromberg - In a fitting way to end the first round, the Red Wings select yet another defensive forward in the draft by taking Stromberg. Stromberg should provide some grit to the bottom half of the Wings roster with his physical play and mean streak.
Assets: Big hitter, knows where to be on the ice
Flaws: Won't make an impact on the scoresheet outside the PIM section, skates with an anchor
Career Potential: 4th liner
Pick Rank:Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Ranking: Not based as much on player, but on quality of selection at that time of draft compared to other available players. 1 head = :wall: ; 5 heads = :dance2:

Looks like Pierre really liked my picks. Cool. The only one he didn't like wasn't even really mine - was picked on behalf of a trading partner.
