Which to play?

So i ran by Gamestop (or should i say Gamehell) because i heard they had a deal going on where you can get a free game with the purchase of 2 games. so i grabbed Call of Duty:WaW to trade in for a few extra dollars (since I'm through playing games with no story... although i do enjoy modern warfare 2 a little bit, and gears 2 thoroughly!) and picked up FFIII,IV and X for the low price of 19 dollars. decent deal right?

well anyway, which would you suggest for me to play first?

I'm leaning towards IV, the characters and plot look really exciting but I'd like some more opinions before I get going!

I would have to say X, although I'm biased becuase I've not
played the other two you got.

I really enjoyed FFX, I thought it was really good. It's quite different from all the other FF's, and it seems to divide fans over the main character too. I thought it was a bit slow starting but it gets really good the further in you go. I love the sense of history you get from FFX as well as the beautiful scenery, monsters, and character designs. It's a really stunning game (not by XIII's standards, obviously) but for it's time it really was. Oh and I know over in the UK it's in a lot of the gaming magazines top 10's of PS2 games.

I already know what FF out of the 3 Turkle is going to champion :P

From watching my friends play bits and pieces of X, I don't think I enjoy having Tidus as the leading role. haha. there's just something about him that.. he seems so ditsy and immature. I'll have to give him a chance later, i think I'm too excited about Cecil haha

I want to say FFX just because Auron and Jecht are so damn cool, but I never did finish that game. I'm hoping to start a FFX playthrough sometime on the site, but the FFVII one seems to be stuck in limbo.

Between III and IV though I'd recommend IV and this is limited knowledge based off of Dissidia and the fact that Onion Knight annoys me and Cloud of Darkness just isn't as hot in sprite form. Although VI looks very promising. After I finally beat FFX that's going to be the next FF I play until XIII/versusXIII comes out.

I say flip a coin between IV and X. Here I'll do it for you...FFX

Tidus is very different from any other FF lead. He is whiney to start out, and his care free attitude can be a wee grating at times but the way his character develops is great. He really mans up but in a different way to Cloud or Squall. That's one thing that I really liked about X they made it feel so different from the other FF's.

Just don't let any preconceptions you may have from watching other people play X put you off. It really is a good game.

Actually the whole reason I made a post to begin with was to mention the fact that you can change party members with the L2 button in FFX and if I remember right you don't always have to have Tidus in your current party you can swap him out with someone else save for the battles where you only have Tidus or a couple other characters or a few underwater battles that involve Tidus.

Yeah that's a good point TMC! Although I must admit I used him in my main party as he's actually really useful. Of course once you get good enough you could just train up another character on his section of the sphere grid. His most grating bits are in the main story anyway. That being said I still really like Tidus.

well i think i was only introduced to the whiny Tidus from the beginning of the game. I mean I'm going to play all three regardless, but i'm going to go ahead and start with IV. just because the freedom of the DS, i can at least make it look like i haven't yet lost ALL of my mind gluing myself to the tv every spare second i get like i did with FFVII.

plus, how can you go wrong with this guy?!

The earlier titles just didn't have enough story for me. I was absolutely bored to tears with FFIII thanks to the 40 seconds worth of dialogue, go level up and fight through a dungeon for 40 minutes, repeat. Yes, yes, I know, games had to be made differently back in the day, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't of liked them 15 years ago either.

I'm playing through FFVIII right now, lots of story, lots of plot devices, lots of things fans are divided over, limited power leveling required. Keeps my attention. FFX is the same way.

Well something inside me forces me to power level like mad on any rpg that I play, so I'm not really worried about the repetitive dungeons... that is, as long as there is a nice story.

I probably won't play FF1,2, or three unless I go through all these other video games that have piled themselves up on my "things to do in my spare time" list...

I've started FFIV and am loving it so far, even though i have only gotten the chance to play it once and didn't get very far. I plan on starting FFX as soon as I get through with IV, then move to 8 and 9....

lol, I am actually going to surprise everyone with my answer and then surprise again for my reasons.

I'd say you should play FFX first (yes, really!) because of it's graphics. Playing the earlier Final Fantasies can be quite a shock to the system and rather frustrating and I find it easier to play them if you are used to playing Final Fantasy games.

So play IV second, there are some rather iconic characters such as Rydia and Kain Highwind.

After you've played IV I suggest you play every other game you have, then play Solatire, Minesweeper, every board game you can find and then maybe, maybe put FFIII into your playstation.

I am not sure I can give a thumbs up to any of the three Nes games. IV, V, VI yes- I, II and III? Not so much.

hmmm.. I think I would have gone with IV first.. for basically the opposite reasons to Turkey (and just coz I enjoy disagreeing with him!) I think that the graphics, depth of storyline and amount of content in regards to side quests, etc is so much more superior in X that whilst IV is excellent it hasn't got as much to it and so personally I'd prefer to do it 1st and then delve into X and all its yummyness afterwards... its like going from 56k to broadband, rather than trying to go back to 56k after broadband... its a bit of a pain!! I wish I'd played the earlier games 1st.

That being said.... still great game... I feel I sound like I don't like it... I do!! Plus portable games are soooo good.. im SUPERDUPER looking forward to getting a PSP and downloading VII for it! Woop!!

Yeah I think i want to start IV first just so that i can play it on the go.
plus theres just something about the characters that I'm really excited about meeting them in-game.

or maybe I'll just divide up my spare time and play them both at the same time?

That was my initial thought. Play VI while on the go, switch to X when you're at home, or not lounging in another room with the PS.

Before I get off my FFVII horse, should I bother playing DoC? I've heard that it is horrible from a few of my friends, and only received a 7 from IGN... but is the story worth playing out? what do you think?
