London's Parr crumbles at Spring International
Local golfer blows six-stroke lead
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

MODESTO, Calif. — Canadian Andrew Parr blew a six-shot lead on the back nine of the final round as Spener Levin won the Canadian Tour’s Spring International on Sunday.

Parr, form London, birdied four of his first seven holes and was cruising along while Levin was sputtering with two early bogeys and falling down the leaderboard. Trailing by eight shots on the 10th tee and with the two playing in the final group, it seemed to be all over except for the trophy presentation.

Slowly but surely, however, Levin, who shot 30 on the back nine and 69 overall, began to chip away at the lead. He eagled the tenth but Parr birdied it and the 11th. By the time they stood on the 15th tee, Parr was still comfortably ahead by four.

Parr then fell apart, bogeying holes 15, 16 and 17 and seeing his lead reduced to one. At the final hole of regulation, Parr stubbed his second shot and got his third on the green but missed the par putt. Levin, always deadly inside ten feet, inexplicably came up short and the duo headed back to the tee for the playoff.

After making routine pars on the first extra hole, they returned once more to the 18th tee. Parr missed a putt to bogey the hole, and Levin, who had made his par, was crowned the champion.

“I was eight shots behind him and I was just hoping to play hard and get a decent finish,” said Levin. “I thought there was no chance that I would catch him. He was playing so well.”

Levin felt for Parr, who closed with a 70.

“You can look at it two ways,” he said. “I shot 30 on the back nine so I did catch up to him. Andrew is a great guy and I know this is a very tough loss for him. He’s a good player and will have a great Canadian Tour season.”

Joe Lanza closed with a 69 to finish solo third at 13 under par while Brent Schwarzrock (71) and Joel Kribel (72) shared fourth spot at 12 under.

Among the Canadian contingent, Calgary’s James Love closed with a solid 67 to move up to a tie for 13th at 8 under while Winnipeg’s Adam Speirs (72) tied for 16th. Finishing one stroke behind Speirs in a tie for 21st is Jim Rutledge of Victoria (71) and Canadian Tour rookie Will Mitchell of Whitby, who shot 73.
