Bartoch qualifies for Beijing By CP MONTREAL -- Two more Canadian records fell and three new swimmers punched their tickets for the Olympic Games in Beijing at the CN Olympic swimming trials yesterday. Joe Bartoch, a 25-year-old from London, set a Canadian record in the men's 100-metre butterfly, finishing at 52.28 seconds to beat the record of 52.44 set by Mike Mintenko set in 2002. "I remember 12 years ago I was sitting up there watching in the exact same pool," said Bartoch. "Now I'm going and I'm here. I hope I can inspire someone else up there." Bartoch, who said he had a slow start to his career, credits a stint studying and swimming at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for turning it around. He finished second to Mintenko at the last Olympic trials and had been eyeing the spot ever since. "Everybody knew when Mike retired, there was going to be a big void, some big shoes to fill," Bartoch said. "Somebody had to step up and I wanted it to be me." Edmonton's Annamay Pierse, 24, beat her own Canadian record in the women's 200 breaststroke by more than a second, finishing at 2:24.65. With the additions of Victoria Poon, 23, and Tobias Oriwol, 22, both of Montreal, plus Bartoch, the team roster stands at 26 with the meet wrapping up today. |
