Microsoft has released the beta of its new data protection software which promises continual disk-based data backup, known as the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM)

DPM allows businesses to recover data after a failure without having to rely on tape. Since restoring the data from tape can be time consuming, some companies prefer these sorts of disk based backup solutions.

"Our whole goal with DPM is to shrink the operational costs associated with IT professionals having to manually recover lost data and manage cumbersome backup and recovery processes," says Ben Matheson, group product manager for DPM at Microsoft. "From what our early-adopter customers are telling us, DPM is doing that very effectively."

Whether companies can get over Microsoft providing the data backup service is of course another matter. MS are often ranked as the least trusted vendor in surveys...
